peerless transaxle

I am in need of some guidance as I reassemble a transaxle for a friend. This is a Craftsman 6 speed that was inherited and no known history. All looked good inside, no rounding of gears, no water intrusion and some gear oil about 1/2 cup. The problem I am having is the reassembly, especially with the shifter rod mechanism. It seems to me to not be that smooth, in fact I used a long wrench to move the shift lever on a dry assembly. Any advice would help.
