kitchen flooring problem

Two years ago I replaced my kitchen cabinet and countertop. I left the tile floor because it didn't seem that bad and I had limited funds and time. It was a big mistake because once the new cabinets were in place, the old floor looked very shabby, and with the passing of time, it only bothers me more. I am contemplating floating a floor over the top of the tile because I am worried about damage to my cabinets and (of course) money and time are still issues.

I thought about going with either a cork floor or a stone look or tile look laminate. Does anyone have any suggestions? I live in a condo in a vintage building in Chicago. The rest of the place still has the original (100+) year old oak floors that are in lovely shape. So the "fit" with the laminate is a concern. What ever I do, it will also raise the floor a bit higher, but I am not sure how big an issue that is.

Thank you!
