To answer the question, I like to see carpet in the closets. With that said, I have measured thousands of homes and I have never ever measured lr, hall, and 3 brs and not had carpet their for any closet. Is this being measure by an installer or a retail store. Installers are known to play games? 400 more fr closets seams strange. I would love to see a layout or diagram. There are many things that can be done to do closets and not purchase a lot of carpet. Like running halfway into a closet than stacking the waste. It just sounds odd and I would bet anything it doesent have to cost as much as you are quoted?

I am purchasing my carpet from Home Depot. Yes, they sent someone out to measure for carpet and I had them measure for the closets also. I was just guessing how much it would cost to do the closets and how much we might save if we put in vinyl flooring instead. I've picked out the Smartstrand and with a good pad, it's running around $32 a square yard.

I would ask them how much you save if you eliminate the closets. You may save nothing at all based on layout. many times the waste can do the closets depending on the width of rooms and layout.

Thanks so much! I'm planning on ordering this afternoon, so your advice is perfect timing!

Met with Home Depot yesterday. You were so right about them using every little piece left! After seeing the layout there was barely a scrap left. Problem though as they had a seam going down my livingroom right in front of couch (they didn't know furniture placement of course). Had to have the redo layout and it cost me more money as they couldn't refigure without more carpet. Worth the cost though as I didn't want a seam in a major traffic area. Thanks so much echoflooring for putting my mind at ease!
