Put wood on staircase?

I'm thinking about taking out the carpet on my staircase and changing it to be wood treads. If you've done something like this, are you happy with it? I'm also thinking about putting wood in upstairs hallway as well. Actually, I'd like to rip out all the carpet upstairs and change it to wood. My concern is that it may make the upstairs echo more though. If you have wood upstairs, are you happy with it?

Be extremely careful on choosing an installer. That staircase is one of the most difficult and time consuming jobs a person will ever run into... seriously.

We had a wood bullnose edge on our stairs, with a faux marble vinyl for the rest of the tread. I loved the look of it; however would like to caution you that we found the wood portion very slippery when going down the stairs in stocking feet. I would think that a full wood tread would be slipplier yet.

We replaced our carpet with Brazilian cherry wood treads and the oak railing with Brazilian cherry to match our BC floors. It turned out beautiful. Our installer was great. All he does is stairs and railings and has a lot of experience, so we were lucky to find him. Ripping out the old treads was a huge job and expensive, but we are happy with the results.

Our wood stairs are not slippery at all. I originally thought that they would be and was planning on putting a runner up the middle of the steps. I love the look of the wood so much and they turned out not to be slippery, so we left them all wood.
