Drinking More Water

This is terribly off topic, but do any of you have tips for working more water into your everyday schedule? I am one of the most under-hydrated people I know, and I want to change this! But I've been saying that I need to drink more water for 10 years... and I still don't do it. I drink coffee (with half caf), tea (both caf and herbal), and the occasional wine and beer. But no water! I need your help.

Create motivation for yourself, buy a pretty water bottle , or designate a container just for your water, fill it and put it by the computer, for example, if that's a place you end up at a few times a day to surf.
I just bought a bright orange water bottle that says "DRINK UP".......

    Or create "rules",
such as you can't eat anything until you've had a few good sips of water,
by developing such reflexes you'll create a habit.

Or buy a case of mini bottles, disperse them through the house so you'll
run into them at different times of the day and remember to drink.

Start with small objectives and it will build up.

    Great ideas from Mitchdesj.

    Also:
Keep your pretty water bottle filled & with you at all times. At home. In the car. Wherever you are, it goes along.

If it helps, put sliced limes (my favorite) or lemons or cucumbers or watermelon into a pitcher of water. They add a subtle bit of flavor, which might help you enjoy water. And it's much less expensive than buying pre-flavored water.

Don't get sucked in to buying bottled water. Just drink tap water -it's fine and often tastier than bottled. Why develop a new, expensive habit of buying water, which might just be municipal (tap) water from the bottling plant, when it comes from your own tap.

Are you genuinely under-hydrated? Do you have headaches, bright yellow urine and so on? The 8 glasses a day is pretty much a myth.

Here is a link that might be useful: Snopes on 8 Glasses

I've gone from should drink more water to guzzler by switching to Crystal Light. I've always loved lemonade...

"Don't get sucked in to buying bottled water. Just drink tap water -it's fine and often tastier than bottled."

YMMV... you'll have to do a taste test. The last several places I've lived the water has been pretty gagworthy "straight up". In my current town it smells and tastes like a swimming pool and the "leave a pitcher/bottle on the counter overnight and the bad taste/smell goes away" trick does not work (not to mention we get a "boil order" at least once a year). In one town I lived in, the water tasted like rotten fish and seaweed from the "organic fertilizer" plant, and in a couple of others it tasted like overcooked cabbage because of the paper mills. I'm unable to lift a Brita type filter pitcher anymore (hands and wrists are weakening further) and the screw-on-the-faucet filter doesn't get along with the faucet and sink in this house. There's an under-the-sink filter waiting to be installed, just a question of finding the time to do so (although we don't have the right sink for a separate tap for drinking water, irritating, but it's not in the budget to replace it), but it doesn't filter out more than it does.

"Why develop a new, expensive habit of buying water, which might just be municipal (tap) water from the bottling plant, when it comes from your own tap."

Read the label! It is federal law that drinking water must be labeled with its source, whether it's water from a municipal water supply that's been filtered or otherwise treated, or from a spring or springs (means the water comes naturally to the surface), and if it's spring water which specific springs the water comes from.

Even private wells are no guarantee of safety or decent taste - in most areas it's the landowner's responsibility to maintain the safety of the well water to a minimum standard. My mother hauled water from a relative's house for YEARS because her well water did not pass state regs (which are pretty loose where she is, too). The only things she could use it for were laundry and toilet, it wasn't even considered safe enough for bathing in!

Great ideas, everyone! Thank you. I am going to go fill a pitcher right now with some mint and water (no watermelon sitting around, alas).

Luckily we live in a city that has amazing water quality, so the water tastes great. My 1920's house has lead pipes, though, so we use a filter.

To answer the question about me really being dehydrated--the signs are all there, and every time I have blood drawn, they tell me I am dehydrated.

When I made the decision to get serious about drinking water I also bought a pretty bottle. I learned to carry it with me everywhere.

You will head to the bathroom more if your body isn't used to it. At first I tried chugging large amounts all at once. I learned it's better to spread it out through the day. Took me a few weeks for the constant bathroom running to ease but I had been drinking nothing but sugary soda for about 8 years.

I try and drink half my body weight in ounces a day. I don't know if anyone knows what the right amount really is but I feel great. Sometimes it's a little more, sometimes a little less. It depends on if I'm at the gym or not that day.

I started a morning cup of water before my 1st cup of coffee. I couldn't forget it that way. I made a rule of a cup of water w/ each meal. My cups are big - probably
    1 1/2 - 2 measuring cups.

I also started keeping a pitcher in the frig w/ sliced lemons and/or limes. My kids will typically go for that over other things.

In the past I've also kept a tally so that I would know how many glasses of water I've had.

Good luck! Can't tell you how much more improved my skin and nails are when I drink water on a regular basis.
