humidifier issues

I have a Carrier HVAC with gas furnace and a fan powered humidifier connected to the return side. Installed in my semi-insulated basement, basement temperate averages about 50. Here in the western part of NC.
First issue I had was the Carrier themidistat set point max 45%. I corrected this issue by installing a potentiometer between the humidity sensor and circuit board. Now I can adjust my humidity levels up to 65% in winter.
Now that the humidifier is running more often I noticed that the air intake is coming from my basement. This means some outside air is being pulled in. This kinda defects having a well inslulated tight house.
The intake vent side of the humidifier is only about 12" away from the supply side of the duct work.
What issues would I run into if I cut a hole in the supply side and ran a short piece of duct work to the intake side of the humidifier, to enclose the system. I am concerned with pressure levels within the ducts supply/return and how this will effect cooling efficiency?
