Clear space for return air

How much clear space do you need in front of your return air duct? We have a bookcase that used to be against the wall where the return air vent was placed for our newly installed heat pump. If we put this bookcase back in front of the return air vent, how far from the wall should it go?

Hello,
Until the system makes a different sound. The AC will require more air flow. Depending on the size of the return air, the bookcase can be possibly returned to the original place. At the most, maybe 4 inches. If the airflow is reduced too much, you will make a dust collector.
