Humidifier System for Air Handler: Do They Work?

My husband and I are renovating a wonderful 1700's Federal House that up to now has been heated by only fireplace/wood stoves. We now have a good Buderous oil hot air system and are much more comfortable. Except the dry air is wrecking havoc on the antiques. I have heard that one can install a humidifier to the air handler so it would condition the air with moisture through out the house. Sounds brilliant. But when I asked my plumber about it he says it's been a while since he's checked but in the past he's heard the systems usually only work for a few years and then corrosion, calcification, or something causes them to break down. I'm in a very rural area and perhaps my guy is not up to date on everything that's out there today. Anyone using a system they would recommend?
