Recently discovered Red Box...

...cheap and convenient ... at least around here.

For $5 we've seen The King's Speech (excellent!), Barney's Version (hard to leave it behind once the credits roll), The Kids Are All Right, Get Low, and tonight Black Swan (started out boring, then morphed into creepy & intense).

Have The Fighter and You Don't Know Jack next up.

Any other recommendations?

We just used Red Box for the first time this week (cable has been out for a week and we ran out of our own meager DVD collection pretty quickly). I LOVE Red Box. And our discovery couldn't have been more timely, what with Netflix advising us that they are going to increase by 50% their fee for the service we now receive. Bye-bye Netflix, hello Red Box. That and I need to (1) look harder for something on cable and (2) utilize the library, for pete's sake.

I've been a redbox fan for a couple years- renting online is the best way to browse and avoid the weekend rush.

We watched True Grit a week or so ago- that was great.

BB, that's what we do and dh told the young lady hogging the box tonight when he went to pick up our flick that's what she should be doing too.

True Grit was the last movie we saw in a theatre. Loved it!

We'd just recently gotten into NetFlix and were considering getting an x-box so we could have the streaming video, but then we also got the news about it. I've been watching Glee and Dexter on line, but want to see it on the big tv.

Haven't tried Red Box yet...how does it work? I always thought you were limited to the DVDs on hand, can you chose others that aren't there?

BTW, DH bought True Grit and we both loved it too. His mom & her DH did't like it, but then again, we have entirely different tastes. We watched The Hang Over the other night for the 1st time, thought it was funny. I've heard Bridesmaids is hillariously funny.

I'm looking forward to the new Jane Eyre and in case you haven't seen it, I loved Inception too.

Natal, you haven't truly experienced Redbox until you get behind a woman who spend 20 minutes on the phone with her boyfriend telling him about available movies - and he keeps nixing them.
Then momma comes by on a scooter, saying, honey, there's people in line behind you and she ignores momma to continue describing movies to boyfriend for another 6 minutes. When she's done, no eye contact or glance in my direction. That was last week and all I wanted to do was return a movie!

pesky, I've thought about getting that too to watch instant play on the big tv but now they gone up on prices I'll stick to the cheapo 2 out a month plan.

Google "redbox discount code" or similar words. I think they still send text alerts out for freebie nights. Also they're on Facebook with codes.

Pesky: You are limited to what that specific Redbox machine has. But there are a lot of Redboxes around (there are probably 5 within a 10-minute drive from me), and if you want to see what's in your closest Redbox machine (or any ones elsewhere), you can go to their website and plug in the address (or search in the zip code). Of course, DVDs can come in and go out in the meantime. So if you're on the website and see a movie you really, really want to rent, reserve it right on the website.

Just remember it's a 1-night rental, and it has to be back in the machine by 9 p.m. the following day.

We are occasional Redbox users. I just happened to rent The King's Speech on the same day it came out on video. One of the best things about Redbox is that you can rent from one location and return to another.

We have a much better selection of movies at our library - if we're paying taxes, might as well use the library.

Gave up on Red Box a couple years ago. Selection at the 3 closest to us was too limited.

    Pesky,
Hook up a computer to your big screen. I used a laptop that had the screen cracked, everything else worked fine. There are plenty of streaming TV series and 2011 movies to watch. More than one could ever ask for. When searching add "streaming" to the input.

Dexter is on Blinkx. I think the next season starts in late Aug/Sept.

I read that a lot of the streaming sites may run into problems and am seeing changes. Most of the programming isdownloaded by outside users. A law is going into effect for copyright infringement. We probably aren't going to get away with this free access for long. Not a surprise, but have enjoyed not having to deal with the sattelite/cable companies.

Red box is limited to a majority of Indy films and a few of the most recent big hits. I too used the internet to reserve. Not missing Netflix at all, hope they didn't shoot themselves in the foot with the double up charge.

Red Box may be limited in selection, but you can't beat the price! I've seen more movies in the past few weeks than I typically watch in months.

We haven't used Red Box, but we watch very few movies. Also, we are somewhat rural and Red Box is not that convenient. I know where one is and we could plan around using it, but not convenient.

We have satellite and I think new movies show there pretty quick.

Pesky, We have Netflix streaming and have been very disappointed because the only things they stream is old stuff or B rated movies. We don't rent DVDs from them either so I'm glad to hear that Red Box is a score, I've been wanting to try it out.

You're right that the selection of Redbox movies is limited. They've long had issues contracting with major studios for their movies. I can't recall if it was the Blockbuster effort to keep them out so they didn't cut into Blockbuster's profits or whether the studios just believed that they get more money from Netflix, Blockbuster and satellite contracts. But now that Blockbuster is pretty much busted, maybe Redbox will be able to soften them up.

I also get a lot of my movies from the library in the next town over (my own libary just doesn't have many DVDs, but it does have lots of books on CDs; the next town over's library has a reciprocal lending policy, so I have a library card there, too.)
The only real issue there is that there can be long reserve lists. I think I was #140 or something to watch "The Reader"! But there's always something on the shelves that I haven't seen before, and the lending period is a full week instead of Redbox's 1 night.
Like JMC, I rely heavily on my-tax-dollars-at-work library for DVDs, CDs and books. Can't recall the last time I actually purchased any of those materials, except at a library book sale!
