Trane Heatpump/Air Handler

I've been talking with several HVAC companies in my area and have narrowed my decision down to two contractors. I am planning to install a trane XR13 with the appropriate air handler. The two companies have only a slight area of disagreement. According to one company, if I install the XR13 and a single speed air handler, I will have a SEER 14 system (variable speed not required). The other company says that SEER 14 is achieveable only with the variable speed system. Both companies are very friendly and seem professional and knowledgeable. Can you guys give me the right answer?

Here's the model numbers I've been told:

Outdoor unit: 2TWR3048

Air Handler (single speed): 2TEC3F48B1000A

Air Handler (variable speed): 2TEE3F49A1000A

There is a $400 difference between the single speed and variable speed units.

Thanks for your help.

A 2TWR3048 condenser mated with a 2TEC3F48B1 air handler is:
    46,000 btu cooling (a full 4 tons is 48,000 btu), 11.1 EER, 13 SEER, 43,500 btu heating at 47F, 8.4 HSPF, 24,800 btu heating at 17F. ARI# 1106154.

The same condenser with a 2TEE3F49A1 air handler:
    46,500 btu cooling, 11.5 EER, 13.5 SEER, 42,500 btu heating at 47F, 8.3 HSPF, 24,400 btu heating at 17F. ARI# 1106158.

The 2 systems are comparable. The EER (cost to run system is cooling) is weak, so is the btu output and HSPF (9 is excellent).

Have they quoted you an XR14? Maybe better performance numbers. An XL15i has much better numbers.

    Best to you.

Thanks for the quick response. When I asked about the XR14, they both said they would be pretty close to the performance of the XR13. They both recommended sticking with the XR13, although they were willing to the XR14 if I desired.

What if the 2TWR3048 is mated with 2TEH3F48A1000A air handler? What are the numbers then?

    Thanks again.

Txaero, the numbers would be as follows (assuming a 2TEH3F48B1--note the *B1):

    SEER: 14.00
    EER: 12.50
    HSPF: 8.50
    Cooling BTU/H: 46,000
    Heating BTU/H: 41,500 (very unimpressive--that's less than 3.5 tons)

The XR14 is not all about a performance increase--you also get a scroll compressor, which is the new technology. The XR13 uses a reciprocating compressor in the 4-ton size.

Whichever route you go, I highly suggest you stick with the variable speed blower.

Ryan and Garyg, thanks for the information. You mention that the Heating BTU/H is unimpressive. What is considered impressive?

As background, I live in the Fort Worth area. Typically, we have mild winters (cold to me, but not compared to other parts of the country). One of our colder winters in the last 10 years had an average temp of about 42 deg. Right now, my heat is all electric resistence (20 kW or approx 68,000 BTU). It typically runs for about 5 hrs total (in 30 minute chunks) on a very cold day. Doing the math, 68,000 BTU * 5 hrs / 24 hrs day = 14,100 BTU/H. So, the 41,500 BTU/H (running for about 8 or 9 hours total) sounds reasonable to me, but maybe I'm thinking of this wrong. Please correct my thinking if it is in error.

Heating btu's should be similar to the rated btus, 4 tons = 48,000 btus.

Since you live in Texas with a mild winter, your issue is cooling. The XR14 matched with the right air handler as Ryan noted above is 12.5 EER and 14 SEER. Your cooling costs are based on EER - an EER of 12.5 is outstanding.

In heating mode, a heat pump loses btus as outside temperatures drop. The 41,500 btus are rated at 47F outside temperature. Don't worrry too much about heating in your climate. I recommend back-up electric strips, similar to what you have for your primary heat now. 10kw or 15kw to suppliment the heat pump in case of a cold snap as well as providing some heat when the heat pump goes into defrost and blows cold air (the strips will temper the cold air when in defrost).

    Best to you.

Thanks again for all the info. I did get a quote for 15 SEER system, however, can one of you guys tell me the SEER, EER, HSPF, and cooling/heating BTUs?

    Outdoor unit: 4TWX5048A
    Air Handler: 2TEE3F49A1000A

    Thanks

The air handler would be 4TEE3F49--the "4" representing a R-410a unit. That match-up would be nice--it would have a scroll compressor and great heating/cooling BTU's.

    SEER: 14.25
    HSPF: 8.7
    EER: 11.8
    Cooling: 48k
    Heating: 50k

What is the price difference between the XR14 and the XL15i?

on the 4 ton XL15i, you get a little better numbers with the larger var spd air handler.

    1385063 Active OEM XL15I WEATHERTRON TRANE 4TWX5048A1 4TEE3D65A1 49000 12.00 14.50 49000 9.00 31400 (includes the Clean Effects)

    1382178 Active OEM XL15I WEATHERTRON TRANE 4TWX5048A1 4TEE3F65B1 48000 12.25 15.00 47500 9.00 30200

Regardless, do not use the Trane stat. Go with Honeywell VP IAQ.

Really the XR14 Trane HP has just as good numbers as the XL15i and should be a better value.

    IMO

The contractor I decided to go with made a change with the outdoor air handler (he installs next week). This should be my last pairing. Can Tigerdunes, or anyone, tell me the numbers for the following match up:

    Outdoor unit: 2TWR3048
Air Handler: TWE065E13 (this might be 2TEE3F65, but not sure)

    Thanks.

can one tell if the unit is a 3phase or single phase
    2tee3f49a1000a serial 7052p8s2v
also they want to switch out the trane condensing unit to a carrier 3 phase under a home warranty process all 13 seer.
    thanks

    TXAERO,

I would not go with the older TWE air handler--make sure it is the 2TEE in my opinion. I also recommend you get a R-410a system, not a R-22 system at this point. Hopefully they have plans on fitting that bit *65 air handler in your space!

    JRKLEIN1,

Don't let them put a Carrier on that Trane air handler... that would be very stupid in my opinion, for reliability and performance.
