Screen around outside AC units?

This is probably a very basic question, but here goes: Would it harm (or perhaps help?) the performance of my two outside a/c units to put a screen around them? They sit on the southwest side of our house and are in the full Tennessee sun from noon until sunset in the summer. Our house is white and it gets HOT on that side of the house with the reflected heat. It's also the side where I have my flower and veggie garden and I'd like to put a decorative trellis or fence around them to visually screen them, and perhaps cut down on the noise when they are running. Would this be okay? How far away would they need to be? Could they be made out of PVC - I assume that wouldn't be effected by the heat? or should I do wood? I'm also wondering if shading the units might help with their efficiency - or maybe I'm just hoping so. thanks for any advice!
