I have seen people who did this....my college room mate for one. All her stitches looked crooked....
Best to slowly knit a scarf the right way....as you will ultimatly be a better knitter for it.

My mother knits "backwards," but she also purls "backwards," and it turns out looking the same as the way I do it. My mother doesn't do any fancy stitches, though. I would think that if you learn the way that's taught normally (Continental or English), you could do more with different techniques and stitches (i.e., with "the norm"), for which a slew of knitting variations and patterns are available.

I purl backwards too, but that part isn't as smooth as the other feels. Sigh...

My mother makes tons of neat stuff, and would never switch to "forwards", so it's a matter of personal taste. I just like to follow directions more than she does. I felt like learning "new" after she taught me, using the Continental method. It's awkward only at first - it helped to have someone show me, instead of reading from a book.

I don't think you are knitting backwards, I think you are knitting what feels right for you, by the way here is a link to a site with the knitting done the way you are talking about, it's called combined knitting.

I'm new to knitting too, but after reading as much as I could about knitting, I get the impression that there is no wrong way to knit, people knit because they like to, I don't think it matters how you do it just as long as you like doing it.

Everyone who learns to knit finds it impossibly awkward at first. Just do it slowly and right, and it will come to you.

Thanks for the post! Now I know, after 25 years, that I've been "combination" knitting too! That's why I avoid the seed stitch like the plague. I wrap the yarn around my left index finger to control the tension, and I can go pretty fast (except for that pesky seed stitch), so I'm not changing! All the women in my family knit this way. I think I'll pay a visit to our local knitting store just to check out how "normal" people knit!
