online buying?

Hi!!

Do any of you have any favorite online yarn stores you would be willing to share with me? I'm an American living in France and the yarn in the stores are outrageously priced and I've used up all of my "stash" from home. I'm starting to have withdrawal shakes lol!

Thanks!

Karen

Lots of people recommend Herschners. I bought from them only once and had no problems. They have a nice mailing catalog too. And that is the only time I have bought online as I can find things locally usually, just not baby weight yarn.

And what brought you to France? How long have you been there? What an interesting experience you must be living.

    Bonjour!

I've bought from smileysyarns.com and recently from yarnsupply.com and had good experiences with both. But I think Herschnerrs is your best bet since it is a well established company and you don't want to have any long-distance difficulties! I've also bought from Herschnerrs with no problems.

Of course you'll have to see if they ship internationally.

    Au revoir!

I bought recently from Joann's Fabrics on-line. I don't know how good their yarn selection is generally, but they had the yarn I was looking for at a fabulous price (it was on sale for the month of October). Don't know if they ship out of the country, but the service was fine, too.

I too have ordered twice from Joann's. I love their selection and their sales, but I haven't really compared them with anyone else. It seems to take a couple of weeks to get the stuff, tho...

Thanks everyone for the addresses but unfortunately none of them deliver internationally :o( I've checked them all out and loved the Joann's and Smiley sites but no luck :o( I'm still searching though if anyone else has any ideas.

Do you know anyone here who could take your order and ship it to you? They could maybe send you a Herrschner's catalog to go through in France and you could give your order. Or they might be willing to go to Joanns for you to pick out some yarn. Is anyone coming to see you from the US? Bring yarn!! If I come up with any sites which ship internationally, I'll let you know.

We're reading about the riots outside Paris. Hope you are in a safe area.

Here's somebody on ebay who ships yarn worldwide. She has an 100% satisfaction rating, but I've never done business with her (him?). You could also contact other reputable ebay sellers to see if they would consider shipping to France since you are very desperate!! But be careful only to deal with sellers who have the best rating.

    Good luck.

Thanks socks for the great tip. I went and looked and she has excellent prices! I'm waiting on a response for her international rates. E-bay in France is just now starting to get up and go so there aren't a lot of articles to choose from but it's getting better. I never thought to check out e-bay in the states. I'll have to rummage around in there more often :o)

My mom sends me a lot of goodies. Especially embroderie floss because it's SO much cheaper in the states and shipping is pennies. The last time she sent me stuff it was some yarn to finish an afgan for my DD. The shipping costs were pretty hefty so I wanted to find an alternate solution. She is coming to visit me in Feb. (yeaaa!!) and I was planning on asking her to bring over some yarn for an afgan for DS.(gotta make it even right? lol) If all else fails I'll just have to sit on my hands and wait but I hope to find something to use for all of my future projects. (my best friend is having a baby ;o) )

Thank-you again everyone for taking the time to help me out!!

Why not check out the online sites of French yarns? Maybe online direct purchases from the manufacturer would be considerably cheaper. Is Mon Tricot a French brand? And look at the European lines too. Is Patton's local? What else?

I wish you good luck in your search.

    Herschnerrs

Thanks for mentioning that name. My Brother-in-law was a SR Executive with them when he was alive and my sister made many of the samples for the catalog. That was way back in the 70's. He passed on in '77.
I used to get a catalog but thought they had gone out of business. I'll check out the link!! Thanks again for the memory that name brought up.

I'd also take a look at elann.com. They do ship overseas and have great prices on closeout yarns. Definately worth a look. I've been happy with their service.

Try KnitPicks.com. The prices look pretty good & my SIL just ordered from them. The yarn was nice. I don't know about international shipping tho. I'll buy & ship for you if you need.
