Heat Pump

Hi everyone. We are fast approaching our ground breaking day. I was wanting to see if anyone has used the air heat pump systems or better yet the hybrid air heat pump system or sometimes referred to the dual fuel heat pump systems. I am thinking with the way energy prices are going and the uncertainty of supply that we need to think of alternative heating sources. We live in Seattle so the temperature is very mild. It doesn't get very cold except on that rare winter night nor does it get extremely hot except for those rare summer nights, therefore I am thinking this is the way to go. However, before completely committing to this area, I would like to hear from those who have actually used this system. Of course the ideal system, I think is the geothermal but instead of spending the money here, I thought what I saved by going with the air heat pump, I would invest that money into solar panels. here are my specs for a heat pump
15 SEER, 12+ EER, 9 HSPF
full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size
scroll compressor preferred
electronic demand defrost preferred
matching var speed air handler
thermostat that controls blower speed
staged backup heat strips

your area/climate along with electric rate makes a high eff heat pump a no brainer. dual fuel(hybrid) is overkill simply because temps at freezing and below are a rare occurrence. I simply believe a backup furnace is not necessary unless you plan on uses for nat gas other than heating.

My suggestion is a 13 SEER unit with a heat recovery unit (desuperheater) connected to it. The HRU will boost system efficiency to the 16 SEER range and give you free hot water to boot. The money you save on the less efficient will pay for the HRU.

We are thinking about replacing our ancient gas furnace and equally ancient AC. Since we added a foam roof, we have little need for the AC and since we live in coastal southern California we have minimal heating needs. Can I just swap in a heat pump or will there be other considerations that I should think about?
