Donuts

I know, strange topic. :) This is for those of you who eat donuts from donut shops. I'm a huge donut/cinnamon roll connoisseur. lol

This morning I'm taking a lot of donuts to where we're going. Our donut shop is Daylight Donuts. Best ever. They've been around since I was a kid.

Rewind. For years and years my friends on the west coast kept telling me how good Krispy Kreme is. I was so jealous they had KK stores and OK. didn't, even though I'd never tasted a KK donut.

Well, a few years ago OK. finally opened some KK stores. We made a special trip to the City to taste one. I got one glazed donut and one glazed w/chocolate icing on top.

I nearly spit them out. They are so sweet (and hey, I love sweets, the sweeter the better!) I couldn't even taste the dough! The chocolate covered donut was so sweet I couldn't taste the chocolate!

I'm wondering if you all have Daylight Donuts in your area, or is it just a regional shop? They close at noon.

When KK opened here, it was huge news on TV. So I'm just wondering if you've eaten from both shops and which one you prefer?

Also, Walmart has one heck of a bakery now. We're hooked on their large blueberry muffins! Walmart of all places. Who would have thought?

I thought I had died and gone to heaven the first time I ate a KK donut pulled directly from the conveyor belt and handed to me. I almost can't resist pulling in to KK when I see the hot light on.

I only buy the original glazed - the chocolate covered and the filled ones are too rich for my taste.

No Daylight Donuts, not here in the land of Dunkin Donuts.

Apparently you have to get the KK donuts while they are hot, which I've never been able to do. Honestly, DD's are better, but the little bakery down the street has the best donuts ever. I pretend that the mile walk there and back burns off the calories, but who am I kidding? But oh, their bear claws.

KK hot off the line is wonderful, but that is it - cold, they are just another donut. Many of them have closed around here.

Dunkin'Donuts stores don't make their own donuts any more, and they literally make me sick. Can't eat them - they leave a greasy glaze on the tongue, and upset my stomach.

This time of year I love to find a pumpkin or spice donut, which Jewel sells. They are not great, but one fulfills that fall longing.

Never heard of Daylight Donuts, but it sounds like a dangerous place! LOL

We don't have any chain donut shops in my city, but the best donut store in town is right across the street from my office. Very dangerous! I have to set limits for myself. My current rule is I must have used my treadmill in the morning, and my scale must not be above a certain limit or I can't have a donut. This donut shop is so popular that when they had to close down for a week due to some unexpected repairs it was covered on the local news!

    Oh, I miss donuts . . .

I too love donuts...in school in RI there was a mom and pop shop, the donut shack, ooh they were dreamy. When a few years ago KK opened a spot in CT same thing lines where hours long and I finally got my try and oh the disappointment! That same KK is now out of business and I was not surprise.

I could never understand the hype about KK. If I'm going to indulge in a doughnut, I want one that is raised and deep-fried and glazed and fresh. We used to have a wonderful local bakery whose doughnuts were so light and literally melted in your mouth. My mouth waters just thinking about them. Unfortunately, in these health conscious days, it's tough to find a deep-fried doughnut. Oh, well, my waistline is happier without them.

Forhgtv, that's the way the DD's are. They're not cake donuts, but the raised, yeast one's. I've had the KK when they're hot, but there is so much glaze on it I cannot taste the bread of the donut. I can't even taste the chocolate icing on them because of the too sweet donut.

I'm also not surprised KK's are closing. I know people heer in OK. flocked to them but they went back to their regular donut shops. Besides, at DD you can get Bear Claws, Apple Fritters, cinnamon rolls, Chocolate or Maple covered Long John's, etc. They're the real deal. lol

I had five DD's today. Five.

I guess I'll have to put Daylight Donuts on my must visit list when I make it to...Oklahoma?

Thankfully, that's one sweet addiction I DON'T have!! I can drive by a KK, DD or any other donut incarnation without a backwards glance. Now find me a bakery with good cookies, like toffee/chocolate or macadamia nut/cranberry, or chocolate dipped peanut butter and I'm a total goner.

I love donuts too but prefer the ones from a local Mom & Pop shop as opposed to KK. I used to love Dunkin Donuts too until a couple years ago I took a bite out of a cake one and it was old, extremely dry and so gross. I'm betting it was at least a week old and I haven't been back since.

For, I just looked online and they're in a lot of states besides OK. The bad thing is they run out of donuts by 10 am. And they're usually closed by noon. When we have to buy a lot, I always call it in and they'll have it ready. When we got there at 10am this morning to pick up our order, they were already sold out of everything! That's how good they are.

I've never liked the cake donuts for some reason.

Seriously though, have you all tried Walmart's bakery lately? Not their glazed donuts, they used to be good, now they're not.

But they have a LOT of good stuff. Even their ready made cakes taste like the old-fashioned bakery cakes. Gone is the wax like taste of the frosting.

Our's sells sugar free bakery cookies/sweet breads/fruit pies which are fantastic.

They also sell Paula Deen's "Ooey gooey butter cake" which is sooo rich but delicious!

Like I said, their large blueberry muffins are to die for.

    I'm hungry again. lol

I think KK closing came from overly aggressive expansion. My kids love their donuts, especially hot off the line but we cannot eat them any more. I did use to love their specialty ones like banana cream filled or apple cinnamon. I too miss donuts, I need to start making some soon.

My problem with almost all donut shops is I cannot fathom paying so much for a dozen. I think the last time I looked, the little mom and pop donut shop was more than $6 a dozen. Just not worth it.

KK opened here and closed within 18-24 mos. I didn't get the hype, kids were selling them door to door before the store opened, school or something. Although they did make a sour dough sprinkled with confectioner's sugar I liked. (Pretty sure it was KK.)

Has anyone ever made their own? My mom used to make them this time of year when I was a little girl. Talk about melt in your mouth, that was such a treat. I want to say she called them potato donuts.

I tried KK once and didn't think it was nearly worth the hype. I have heard that it's best to have them piping hot, but I wasn't going to sit around a donut shop waiting for them.

We don't have Daylight Donuts, but we have Dunkin. I grew up on Winchells Donuts (in So Cal, or the donuts from the Helms Bakery Man. My fave donuts come from a local grocery store chain...they are TDF!

Don't know if you've ever heard of VooDoo donuts...they're world famous, and even perform weddings! I've not had the chance to try their donuts, but I hear they're phenomenal. I was in Portland on Friday and meant to get over there, but didn't make it. I guess I'll have to go and make the supreme sacrific to try them and report back...

Make sure to check out their menu

Oooohhh ... make your own ...

I remember back when I was a little girl - shaking hot donuts in a paper bag full of sugar. mmmmmm

I've tried both yeast and baking powder - but they are not the same - just to give my boys that same memory.

My kids always bring home VooDoo donuts when they go to Portland, but the last time my DH and I were up there the line was half way around the block! I understand that they have a location in Eugene now also. The next time you are in S. Oregon you have to try Donut Country, Pesky - and then stop in across the street and see me!

I don't think a dozen donuts for $6.00 is bad, especially knowing they're "home made." Kind of. In fact, I've always wondered how donut shope can pay for overhead. lol Since we don't eat them everyday, it's a treat for me so I'll shell out the bucks.

Never heard of Voodoo. I'll look at the link.

Nothing like a fresh, fluffy donut!

KK is very popular here in many southern states. I can think of 4 locations in the nearby area. I do think the hot ones just melt in your mouth. A funny, my mom used to tell me about when she was pregnant with me, sending my dad out for a box of KK doughnuts.

I like donuts pretty well, but if I'm craving something sweet, they wouldn't be my first choice. We have a local shop which is quite good, thankfully it's not convenient to us. LOL

Oakley - FIVE donuts???!!!! I'd be sick if I had done that. I love sweets, so rarely keep much of them in the house, or I'd really be in trouble.

Around here Tim Horton's is the place for doughnuts.

We have Dunkin Donuts on practically every block in MA. We also have a small locally-owned shop that has great donuts -- people rave about them. It's not a huge draw for me. We get donuts maybe 3 times a year as a treat, mostly for the kids but DH and I, of course, have one. Or two.

Around this time of year, though, our local farm-type stores have apple cider donuts. Sooooo good.

You guys are killin' me. I haven't had a donut in years and I could eat a dozen by myself. I was on a House Tour yesterday and they served apple cider and glazed Krispy Kremes. I had to clench my fists not to grab one.

I like the way the glaze on the KK's kind of crackles when you bite it. We also have Dunkin Donuts, but not the other you mention. However, I don't eat any of them.

Aaaah, the age-old debate of cake vs. yeast. I grew up in the North and the West, so I thought Dunkin Donuts and cake donuts were the be-all, end-all of donuts. Then I moved to the South and was indoctrinated in the ways of the "hot donuts now" Krispy Kreme glazed yeast deliciousness.

There's nothing like a piping hot Krispy Kreme. But I do love a cake donut, too. Variety is the spice of life . . . and the spice of donuts.

We have Dunkin Donuts here too although they closed, a couple did re-open. They are not near as popular as KK. Dunkins are more cake donuts if I'm not mistaken. I used to like their donut holes, but have not been to one in years.

There is someone where I work who orders cakes from Walmart (I don't shop at walmart), and they are not bad, although not great either. We really "try" to stay away from all those goodies, and if we do have something, I usually make it. Such as a delish apple crisp this weekend, with honey-crisp apples.

I'll eat a cake donut only if it's fresh. Daylight Donuts are similar to KK's, but they're twice the size, hence you get to taste the fluffy dough. Plus, you can really taste the chocolate on a chocolate glazed donut. Which is dangerous because the chocolate just lingers in my mouth and I want to ear more. Which I do. :)

I grew up not liking donuts at all. My only experience were raised glazed donuts, which still don't appeal to me. It wasn't until I learned that you could have chocolate on a donut that I learned to like them! My favorite type of donut is an old fashioned buttermilk bar with chocolate icing. Fresh, but with the icing set and not wet. Mmmmmm!

I grew up with KK donuts - in Florida. They definitely are wonderful hot off the conveyor belt. I live in Ct and took my kids to a location that opened here. They loved them too but now it's closed. :( I have also heard that the quick expansion of stores was the problem. KK will always be my fave. Sorry but I don't care for DD's. I really don't eat doughnuts anymore anyway. :(

My absolute favorite is a cruller from a bakery. I like the plain ones, but the best are the ones with granulated sugar on them IMHO. I have not had one in years! The ones from DD do not count, especially the "french" ones. Just totally different. My grandpa used to get Crullers every sunday morning. Nothing like it with a cup of tea. :)

Second would be KK. I LOVE them. The regular, glazed, hot off the belt. Wow. Just super yummy. I only had them once on vacation. Luckily for me they do not have any where I live. I would be in serious trouble!

I don't think we have any non-chain donut shops around where I live. We do have cupcake stores. I don't know where they are on purpose, but once in awhile someone brings a dozen or two in to work.

When I lived in Michigan there was a donut shop on Seven Mile and Woodward, gosh they were good. Lynnfromnewmexico, have you ever been there? Really bad part of town, but the donuts were fabulous.

I think one of the original KK donut shops is here in Birmingham on 1st Ave., really good, but I don't like them hot, too sweet.

KK originated in South Carolina, I believe.

Newdawn, no, I haven't been around that area in many years. When we're back there on vacation, we're either at the cottages in Lexington on the lake, or in Richmond or Sterling Heights visiting family.

As much as I love donuts, DH (being a family practice doc) is a real wet blanket about donuts being so unhealthful for you :~(
So, we hardly ever have them(sigh!). KKs here were all the rage and then all went out of business. Two years ago one reopened but I haven't been back. We have a lot of Dunkin Donuts, but when I do buy a donut, it's usually from the grocery's bakery, where I eat it as I shop. I tell myself that I'm walking off the calories pushing that cart (LOL!).

Lynn, if you ever want a treat, there is a candy shop on Eubank (may be Juan Tabo but pretty sure it is Eubank) that also sells donuts. They are cake donuts but that are very, very good. My 2 favorites there are maple pecan and an orange one. We can't have wheat but if I were going to have a treat, they would be it.

Lexington on the lake is so pretty and they some cute shops.

Pesky, I could have written your post. Yes, to Helms coming by....memories of yore. But I was into their cream puffs and eclairs. Winchels was my all time favorite, they have gone away. The name still exists but are privately owned and do their own thing, which is not the same thing.

i like dd iced mocha coffee(!), but have got to say i am never tempted to buy doughnuts... my kids only had doughnuts once in a blue moon while growing up.
i much prefer a fresh, chewy bagel!!! (i could eat 5 of those in a day!!)

Yes -- another Canuck here in Texas!

Just got back from a car trip up to Canada to see our families -- and told my husband to stop at the first "Tim Hortons" near the border (there are some near the border towns -- like Detroit, Port Huron, Buffalo plus a few other spots etc. Delicious food (lovely soups, buns and scones) plus great coffee and Donuts! This is a nationwide chain -- and it is found in almost every small, medium, large villages, towns and cities! LOL! :) We even brought back a huge tin of their coffee! The chain is now owned by Wendys -- and we keep hoping that they might add more stores! :) There WAS a shop in Dublin Ohio (near the Wendys headquarters LOL!) if anyone here is nearby! :)

Hereabouts we get out donuts from Shipleys. Very tasty -- but no coffee!

Terriks, that is exactly how Daylight Donuts makes their "Longjohns" and chocolate covered donuts! You get the taste of the rised dough and the chocolate. With KK's there is so much glaze on them you can't even taste the chocolate!

Speaking of "DD's" are you all talking about Daylight or Dunkin?

I'm taking it none of you have a Daylight Donut shop around?

Even as a kid I didn't like Dunkin Donuts, but always loved Daylight.

Oooh, Tim Horton's! There's one or two on the New York Thruway and I always stop at them when I'm driving out to see my brother and his family. They are slowly moving down past the border in to the north eastern states--there's bunch in Maine, and a lot in upstate New York, and a few in Connecticut. Why they are bypassing Massachusetts and New Hampshire is beyond me.

Good donuts. Good food. Good coffee. What's not to like?

KK donuts are *definitely* over-rated, hot, cold, or in-between! When they opened in San Diego, the line was so long it was 'news worthy', but I waited a couple of weeks before giving them a try~~what a disappointment. I preferred Sunny's Donuts, which is just a little hole-in-the wall~~they put KK to shame.

I'm now in Austin, TX, home to Round Rock Donuts, and they *are* the best! They were featured on the travel channel a few years ago as one of the best donuts in the country. ;o)
