Help needed NOW! Carpenter is here!

Carpenter is here to drill holes in cabinets for the knobs. I haven't given the position much thought. When I held one up in place fairly low, the carpenter told me position is personal preference but added that most people nowadays are going higher. PLEASE, go measure how high from the bottom edge of your cabinets the holes were drilled. I have to decide in the next hour!! THANK YOU!

Quick cut out a piece of paper the size/configuration of the handles/knobs you chose and tape it up on various parts of the drawer so you can see placement.

Then you can decide how that will look multiplied by X. Don't forget there are places where you have pairs side-by-side.

Cabinets are different so don't go by anyone else.

Hope I'm not too late. For drawer fronts, I was planning to have them centered (not only up and down, but left to right too). This is for the smaller drawers, for the larger drawers, you may need more than one knob or pull. Sorry, I hadn't decided on the placement on doors yet and don't have the cabinets installed to look. Here's a link to an article I found that may be helpful. Also, if you have any time, try looking at the Finished Kitchens Blog. Let us know how it turns out.

Some of this depends on your door/drawer style---if you have raised or recessed panels, it matters more than with slab. But here's what we did:

    - On drawers, we picked a measurement from the top edge of the drawer and kept it consistent on all top drawers and all drawers of a certain size. So for our big pieced deep drawers, we measured 5" down from the top; for our shallow slab top drawers, we measured 3" down from the top. We are unusual in that we opted to use skinnier rails for the four-drawer stacks than for the three-drawer stacks, so those handles use different measurements but end up with the handles roughly the same distance from the rail, if that makes sense. This put all of the handles on the center panel but slightly above center (moreso for deep drawers than shallow drawers).

For doors, we have handles and I had no idea what to do so we just went with our cabinetmaker's suggestion, which was to line up the bottom of the handle (ours have squared off edges) with the top edge of the bottom rail. For knobs, I've heard of people centering them on the square formed by the rail and stile, if you have pieced frawers.

On all of ours, we looked at it first to see how it looked and then measured and wrote down the measurements. They are different on every drawer of a different size, and I really don't think your eye notices it---we went with what works best for the individual situations.

we have slab fronts and decided to have our pulls installed on the higher side. I'd say they're probably 3-4 inches from the top and obviously centered side to side on each slab. Ours is a modern look, not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Had read here to place handles/knobs slightly higher than center (I think ours are 1/16"-1/8" higher) so they would look entered when viewed from above. Apparently they look lower than center otherwise (optical illusion).

Of course, this is only if you want your knobs to look centered. If you prefer them higher than center, I don't know of a formula. Cab installer and I hand-placed the handles or strips of painters tape on the larger/bottom drawers, and moved them up or down until they looked "right."
