Air Conditioner Increasing Room Humidity

I have a window air conditioner that increases the humidity in the room. This has me baffled. The coils were cleaned at the beginning of the summer. I added a hole in the bottom to drain water and there is no water pooling in the unit.

How is it possible for a freon air conditioner to increase room humidity?

    It takes about an hour to lower the temperature 5-7 degrees.

    The RH can start at 35% and 1.5 hours latter the RH with be 50%.

    Do you have it set (if you can) so the fan goes off the same time the compressor goes off? If not, as the fan continues to blow, it sends air across a very wet coil...reintroducing humidity. I guess that works OK in a desert climate but not in the Gulf Coast.

    Is the 50% RH too high for you, or are you just curious about the increased humidity?

    If you want lower humidity, assuming you have a multiple speed unit, try setting the fan on a lower speed. That will increase the unit's dehumidification capacity at some expense to its cooling capacity. It may take longer to cool the room, but the humidity should be lower. Dropping the temperature five to seven degrees in one hour sounds like over cooling to me.

    Could you describe the unit's operating conditions. How often does the unit cycle as it is now, and what are the rough percentages of compressor on and off times? What is the outside temperature during the time you are using the unit, and what is your desired temperature for the room? Are you getting any condensate out of the unit on the outdoors side?

    Thanks guys, I think that is it, when the compressor shuts off, it re-humidifies the room. I'll try having the fan turn off when the compressor does or lower the fan speed to see which works best.

    This is counter intuitive since air conditioning systems remove water from the air but here is the science. Most air conditioners have the subcooling adjusted between 35 and 40 degrees to avoid water freezing on the evaporator. so when the dew point reaches 40 degrees water will stop condensing on the evaporator. Since most people prefer their homes between 72 and 75 degrees this results in about 30% humidity. All you need to do is check an enthalpy chart to find where 72 degrees crosses the 40 degree dew point line or use an on line calculator: http://www.dpcalc.org/ this one at a home temperature of 75 degrees and a condenser temperature of 45degrees shows an indoor humidity of 29@ and it will not matter what the outdoor humidity is as long as it is above 15%.
