How often do you wash it? Maybe an occasional trip to the laundromat would be more cost effective than buying a machine for one item.

To know if it'll fit, you'd need to know the size of it in cubic feet. All comforters are different. One kind of king comforter will fit in machines that other kinds won't. Best thing is to bring it to the store and try it to see if it'll fit.

No matter what size machine you buy, I can assure you there will be something you own that will not fit in it -- or wash properly even if you can make it fit. I wouldn't make a buy/don't-buy decision that way.

Many laundromats have huge machines just for those situations. I am amazed that you can't find a cleaner who will do for you. They're common where I live.

This is why they make duvets. The comforter stays clean and doesn't need washing.

If you are that worried about the germs that may be present in a laundromat machine you could always run one empty load with some detergent + Lysol concentrate before you wash your comforter. That way the machine would almost certainly be squeaky clean (and probably sterile) before you washed anything.

The two runs on the big machine + Lysol would still probably be cheaper than having it professionally done. And unless you have it dry-cleaned - which I agree would be headache-inducing - you're in the same germ boat with their machines, potentially.

Before I got my large FL I used to go to the laundromat w/ my comforters. I checked the machine, usually you can tell if it looks clean inside. You can tell by the smell too.I always did two washes. First w/extra detergent, second without. Never ever had any problems. I used the triple size machine. Those machines are usually well taken care of,at least around here. Lots of Hispanics using them and they are using more detergent and softener than they need. The woman are really clean so I never worried.

My Maytag Bravos HE TL washer (4.6 cu ft capacity) holds our king-size comforter easily. I also wash 3 twin-size comforters at a time, with no problem.

You could take the comforter to an appliance store to see if your comforter will fit in another washer.

One reason I bought my washer was so I could wash comforters in it. But there were many other reasons, too. If your washer does everything really well, I would also recommend taking the comforter to a laundromat. Some in our area are not so clean while others are squeaky clean. It all depends on management.

Detergent + Lysol concentrate would definitely get any machine ultra-clean -- the machine would be sanitized.

I send my down comforter to Blanc Plume. They clean down for the manufacturer of my comforter.

I have included a link. I don't wash my down comforter because I know there is a better process that keeps the down in good shape and prevents it from getting that funky wet duck smell. I also always get a little extra stuffing added to my pillows when I send them out. I clean my pillows and duvet twice a year.

Like you I wasn't willing to go to a laundry mat. And I was tired of paying the cleaners to wash my comforter. So
I stuffed a monster king size comforter in my fairly new Samsung FL. It did fill the whole drum.

I ran it first with a rinse and spin just to get it wet and to make sure it was going to work. Then ran it through the cycle. Mine is a 4.0. So I would bet that the Electrolux will definitely work. You might even be okay with the newer and larger Samsung or LG. So take that comforter with you when checking out washers and stuff away.

I just finished washing new king size comforter. This one is thick and I literaly had to stuff it in (LG 4.00)and push the door closed. Washed it 2x, second time without soap,wanted to make sure there isn't any soap left,I used warm water,low spin,water plus and couple of extra rinses on top of it w/ water plus. It came out smelling fresh, no dry spots anywhere. I was worried. I wash my other king comforters but they are medium to light compare to this new one. I wonder thou if washing these big comforters are bad for the bearings. Will the machine wear out faster? Anybody knows?

I do mine without problems in my LG. But it's down, not polyfill. It compresses. Drying takes a bit longer, but if I'm not rushed, I just hang it outside to dry.

I wouldn't force-fit a comforter into my FL washer...would worry about the comforter possibly rubbing hard against the door seal, and twisting it. Or getting caught between the drum and the seal. Or maybe even stressing the door lock, if the comforter is constantly pressing against the door. The one thing I didn't think about is the bearings :-)

Incidentally, you might find Miele's comforter-loading instructions useful, even though you obviously aren't bound by them. They say to load it so a smooth surface (rather than edges and corners) faces the door, and don't allow the comforter to touch the door seal. And, the maximum recommended comforter size for the "big" Miele washers (4.0 IEC) is 84x88 (full-size). My own experience is consistent with this recommendation. I suspect the king-size comforters that many people here fit easily into their washers, are much thinner than the comforters I have, and the ones Miele is talking about.

suburbanmd, my king-size comforter is very thick, "pouffy". It fills up my Maytag Bravos HE washer (4.6 cu ft), but it is not 'stuffed' in the washer with no room to move. I wash it on the Bulky cycle.

Any of the comforters I stuff in eventually deflate when wet, even the down one and when finished you can see there is room inside. It was the new comforter that scared me b/c of it's thickness. Thankfully I only use it during cold months so I will wash it once a year and it has a duvet so it doesn't get that dirty.
When I washed it, once it got wet-it took a while, I paused it and checked it inside,I was watching the whole washing process on this one, ready to stop if needed. Would I wash this one every week? Hell no, I would worry it will wear the machine out. But I'm hoping once a year it's O.K.

mara, I should have said, "washers similar in size to my Miele". Your Bravos is of course bigger :-)

I measured and weighed my king comforter that I washed in my Samsung. 94 x 102 and weighs 13.6 pounds. I folded it so there were no ends around the face of the opening. And as mentioned, I did a rinse and spin just to see if it would work before committing soap to the process.

Perhaps OT, but where did you find your comforter, may I ask? Mine is 88" x 110" and I do not know the weight, but it covers a 17" deep mattress on a king bed.

Kitchendetective, I've had the comforter for years. It's my youngest son's bedding. It's kind of a patchwork design with a lot of black and animal print. Sounds funky but it is very pretty in a masculine sort of way. The only thing is it is heavier than heck because of the puff filling with the patchwork design. As I'm guessing I would say I probably bought it from Penney's.

Unfortunately some of the newer comforters are getting smaller in size (a way for the manufacturer to cut costs) and then don't cover the deeper mattresses.

housefairy, my king-size comforter is used by a son, too. It's very thick, as you described yours, has the puff filling -- is so thick dear hubby won't sleep under it even on bone-chilling winter nights, says it's too hot.

I bought ours at Belk about 10 years ago, while visiting my sister in another state, it's a deep blue color, and it hasn't faded one iota, which is totally amazing to me. It's hasn't begun to fray either, though I've washed it many times since I got my HE washer. Before I got the washer, that son (without my knowledge, of course) had let two new puppies sleep on it for several weeks. I was aghast when I found out. The washer came with a sample of liquid Tide w/Dawn HE detergent, so I used that to wash the comforter, in warm water. I was thrilled and amazed when it came out looking new and smelling FRESH -- I sure wish I could find that Tide HE formula at stores! That son KNOWS not to ever do that again.
