Cleaning old dining chairs

With all the experiences on this forum, I am hoping to get some help.

The chairs I will be using for my dining room are 35 yrs old and hand carved. They need major cleaning and polishing. I wanted to have them refinished but my decorator seems to think cleaning, paste polishing, and Old English Scratch Stain will work fine. I could not believe he actually wants to save me money. LOL We'll see!

It would take me forever to clean them with Murphy's Soap (I have tested the waters). I have heard about mineral spirits but wish not to bring a flammable solvent into the house. Any Suggestions? The chairs are below.

I have had my eye on this table for the past 1 1/2 yr. The little thumbnail with the chairs is my inpiration picture.

Here is a link that might be useful: inspiration picture
