w/d set under 1k?

We need to get a new washer/dryer. I've been reading through this site, consumer reports etc. Is it possible to get a decent set for under $1k? I had ordered the Kenmore 700 set from Sears yesterday, but then I voided the order when I saw the washer was the very lowest rating on CR.

I don't really have a TL/FL preference, but I really can't spend more than $1k and would like to keep it cheaper if possible, so I'm guessing that means a TL set. I would like to get a matched set since we'll probably be selling the house in a couple of years and I think that will show better (another reason to keep the price down - we'll sell the appliances with the house).

Thank you in advance for your help!

Why not go to the local appliance dealer and make a bee line gfor the scratch and dent area of the store. A new washer dryer set can be got cheap there.

Who cares if the price is marked like our new washer dryer set at $777 for the washer and $550 for the dryer, my lovely wife offered $500.00 for the washer and $300.00 for the dryer and the offer was accepted and we had delivery in 3 days. We also got $150 in rebates from the power company and Maytag.

Who cares if the machines are scratched and dented the only who sees the machines are members of our family.

Go cheap, go to the scratch and dent area of the local dealer and skip the box stores with the bad attitudes.

Oh yea we got a matching set of Maytag FL loaders that were last years top of the line Neptunes made by Samsung.

I've tried the scratch and dent section, but I can't really find anything. Maybe it's the time of year, but there are hardly any washers and dryers in that section! I also tried the Sears Outlet, but the prices seem the same to be the same as regular Sears!

Well, you could buy this washer and dryer -- commonly referred to as the FriGEmore here because Electrolux sold the set under the Frigidaire, GE, Kenmore, and Gibson brands -- for under a grand (plus sales tax). They're not really fancy, but they're workhorses and they'll give you the principal benefits of a front-loader without the $$$ and without some of the complexity that people complain about fixing. You also can save some money on the dryer if you're not hung up on having a matching washer-dryer set. :-p

Thanks! I bet if I got another Kenmore dryer, it would look similar enough that it would work for my purposes and also do a good job. I just want people to walk through the house and not see an obvious disconnect, know what I mean?
