mismatched chairs

When my husband made our farmhouse style kitchen table he made benches to go with it and we are considering getting rid of the benches and using mismatched chairs instead. My question is how do I achieve that look? Do I just start buying chairs and painting them? My colors would be similar to this picture, our table is much larger and I think we could get at least four chairs on each side.

I found these on craigslist. Do you think they would work?

The inspiration photo had two chairs with arms, notice how they do not pull up under the table. I would avoid that sort. I would go for a unifying element. All the same height back, all straight across the back..I can't decide if you used the two round backs as captains chairs and the head and foot if that would work. You are off to a good start!!

I would use ladderback chairs for a farmhouse table. What I don't like about the inspiration picture is the color of the table. The colors of the chairs don't go with the table.

But I do love the idea of mismatched colors.

Ladderback chairs are my favorite but why are they always the hardest to find?
I've not bought the chairs in the picture was just kind of asking if I should. I don't really care for the windsor style chair I'm not sure why, I just never have. But if I have several styles and only a couple of those I could probably live with them.
We never put chairs on the ends of the table but that is probably because with the benches it would make getting out nearly impossible.
Another question, my bar stools are already painted different colors but they are all the same style, is this going to be too much? Our walls, ceilings and floors are all the same dark stain so I think adding the color is a good thing.
The table is stained dark too.
I've recently posted pics of the living room and kitchen but not the kitchen table, I'll do that in a bit.

We had mis-matched chairs at a farmhouse style table for years. The table was only 60" so we had room for 6 chairs. We bought 2 each of 3 styles at a furniture outlet in a room called "only the lonely" LOL. They were high quality chairs, but none matched. I think we paid $75.00 apiece for them. Two of the styles were very similar to the photos of the chairs on the right. The other 2 were more ornate, with fancier legs and wider seats. We put those at the ends of the table.

We did not paint them, as we originally planned. None of the finishes matched - some were oak. One of the big ones was whitewashed. What made it work was the repetition of the styles.

If you get nice chairs in good condition, instead of painting them you could put varied, colorful chairpads on them, instead. That would continue your theme, but in a different way. We had a very bright patterned area rug under our table.

And behind the table so you get a feel for the room. Thanks.

Instead of painting them different colors - would you consider painting different style chairs - white (or off-white)? That would bring in some relief from all the wood and tie in nicely with your shelves and cabinet. I do like using painted chairs with a wood table. I am in the process of painting 6 antique caneback chairs to use with my present stained wood pedestal table.

    Beautiful home and table/bench!

The lighter ones are pale sea green and pale grey blue that was left over from a clients job.

Personally I think that if you're going to have an eclectic look don't try to match your chairs but I think that it looks best if the colors are somehow unified.

I had 18 people over for Thanksgiving so DH brought chairs home from work (one of the perks of fixing furniture is that there are always extra chairs!). By the time I had all of the chairs pulled up to the table I thought it was beautiful. There were light wood chairs, dark wood chairs, painted chairs, ladder back, captain, rushed, caned, Victorian, Windsor style, you name it. It was a complete mish mash and more perfect than I'd ever though that it could be. I wish so much that I would have had time to get a picture!

BTW - your place is awesome!

PS - yes I think that the ones on craigs list work. I'd just keep the colors the same or very similar.

Thanks everyone. Keep the ideas coming. I'm waiting on a reply from the craigslist ad. Those chairs are only $50 for all five if they still have them.

Thefoxespad- Your chairs are lovely, just the look I'm going for.

Tina- I have a lot of buttery yellow in my kitchen so I thought the other colors would break that up. Hubby says no more yellow LOl

seagrass- chair pads would look nice but I've not had good success with them in the past.

I love these chairs in the picture, not really what I want but thought I would share because they look so pretty.

I really love your table benches, though it is all a bit dark. I am not a big fan of mismatched chairs especially the first picture, which looks to me like someone grabbed chairs from the kids' play-room to make s[ace for guests. I do think that cream painted chairs would look good (mismatched in style if you like that), but not too much color in that room, you need some nice serene white or cream.

I like these too. Makes me think I need to go with lighter colors.

I'm a fan of mismatched too, but I think there needs to be a unifying element. Different colors? Same style chair. Different style chairs? Same/similar color. I love the pic of the white chairs and houndstooth that you posted. I agree that going light would be best in your home, especially with your pastel bar stools. What about painting the chairs to match those? Either pick your favorite barstool color or two and paint the chairs all that, or paint each chair so it has a matching barstool color.

The chairs on craigslist were sold. Don't you hate it when they don't delete the ad. I'm leaning toward repainting the pink bar stool a lighter shade and then doing the kitchen chairs to match same colors as the bar stools OR painting all the chairs/stools the same color. My first choice would be the yellow of the cabinets but like hubby thinks that may be to much yellow. I love white or ivory but for some reason it just doesn't look good against our wood. I have one ivory end table and it looks terrible.

I think they need to be a unified color scheme. Love your room and love the look.

Someone posted not too long ago showing a pic of their dining room after hanging a crystal chandelier above the table. Mismatched chairs were used and it looked wonderful. Sorry I'm not giving much info to go on, but the house was an old Victorian? sparse, but great, looking room?

Being that I remember what the rest of your very fantastic home looks like I would not do the mismatched chairs. You already have quite a mix in the rest of your house (that looks good) but if you keep going with that theme to much it could start looking like a giant garage sale gone amiss. I would make some nice upholstered cushions for those benches. If you have room you could add a chair on each end of the table (but leave the benches) or add all matching chairs. Love that table!

Are you in the Dallas area? I have 6 old but sturdy ladder back, rush seat chairs in my garage looking for a new home.

I have an eclectic mix of chairs for my dining room. They are all seen as found. We like the look and will keep adding to it as we find chairs that are similar in style. I think something similar would look great in your house as a contrast to the wood table and walls.

It was TheFoxespad's thread. Hope you don't mind that I post the link to it.

Here is a link that might be useful: mismatched chairs under chandelier

Ahhh yes, the small celebration. When I found out that I was doing this smaller one I wanted DH to bring all of those other chairs back to recreate the 'big' table that I did but I didn't have th eheart to ask.

angiedfw- I wish I were near Dallas I'd be right over to buy those chairs! I'm in MO. Thank you so much though for thinking of me!
mabeldingeldine- I love how those chairs look and I love your wall color.
schoolhouse- Thank you for the link and TheFoxesPad - those chairs are adorable too.

Thank you all for your help and I'll keep you updated on the progress. As far as keeping the benches, as much as we love the way they look we do have company quite often and getting in and out is a real pain.

Our local Habitat re-store has 70 chairs from Red Lobster, all the same but in different colors. Check out a local store near you; the one near me is on-line.

Have you considered keeping one bench and adding the chairs on the other side? I think more of a calm look.
Would find a soft color and paint all of the chairs the same (soft green or blue).

i think mis-match of colors is a good idea but mis match of style will look odd a bit.... its not visually calming.

The hunt for chairs has begun! On our first outing we scored 4 and spent less than $40. I didn't think that was to bad. I bet we sat in 20 chairs trying to find old chairs that are in good repair is not going to be all that easy. We found two matching that are larger with arms that we will use on the ends. I'm attaching a picture of my favorite. I'm not sure what style it is but I love it. Now that I'm going to be forming a small collection of chairs I need to educate myself on the styles. Where do I start? Thanks

Love that chair Farmchic. I agree, keep them basically the same style. Exmple: in your previous craigslist find that you showed, the middle chair was definitely too short for the others. Not sure about mixing the windsor and the ladderback styles.
