Lighting on Mirrors

Help me....

I am trying to update a bathroom that currently has the hollywood type bulbs on a mirrored strip that is attached right onto the mirror over a double vanity.

We removed the fixture to find 5- 2.5" diameter holes drilled in the mirror to attach the fixture...grrr. All in a row - but at varying distances apart. No symmetry at all.

I really don't want to replace the ceiling to vanity mirror, as that would require also replacing the two ceiling to vanity side mirrors. It is a small bath with a double window opposite of the vanity, so the mirrors are perfect for enlarging the room.

I think I have found a replacement fixture that will hide all the holes, but, I may need some new holes in the mirror for it's installation.

So my question is - how difficult is it to drill new holes in the mirror? What tool do you use to cut the holes? What's the liklihood of breaking the mirror?

Another alternative would be to mount a piece of wood over the row of holes and then attach the fixtures to the strip of wood. Has anyone ever done this? Do you just use silicone adhesive and then caulk the edges?

Any other ideas are welcome. The double vanity & mirror width is 72". The measurement from the outside edge of the left hole to the outside edge of the right hole is just under 60". I have even considered three matching mixtures mounted next to each other to cover the holes, but again, I'd need new holes in the mirror.

Thanks for you help!
