Have you brought it up with the code compliance officials at the city?

Not sure if the attorney is the correct route. Assuming you get a good one, for example. They can get the worst one in the world. All they have to do is delay and delay, which will ultimately cost you more money to pay for your attorney to deal with them. And at any time your neighbor can point the light down.
But I'm sure there is something you can do through the city.
There was a big story in California. Someone's big trees were blocking their neighbor's solar panels. The trees were there first.
So, according to code, the trees had to be cut down.

I will second the suggestion of starting with the city. Not sure its worth hiring an atty, although I would not second the suggestion of black out curtains -- I don't think you should have to put up with this. If the city won't do anything (I think they might, depending on where you live I suppose), your county courthouse may have a law library (mine does) and you might find a book on neighboor disputes, how to bring a lawsuit, etc. Barring some more specific law, I would think you could sue for common-law nuisance; the fact that the light is not code compliant may be evidence that it is a nuisance. If you can file such a claim in small claims court (you might not), it shouldn't be too hard since that is more or less set up for non-attorneys.

I write all this assuming that you have tried to approach your neighboor with no success. If there is any chance that some neighboor-to-neighboor diplomacy might work, definitely give it s try. Is there another neighboor onthe block you might act as an informal intermidiary? HPH -- good luck --

I would get a brighter light or a high wattage green laser. Put some sort of garden gnome on a pedestal and light it in line with his bedroom window. Purely coincidental it's hitting his house. You just didn't want Mr. Gnome to be scared in the dark.

I have a multi-step plan that will not fail.

Invite a couple friends over after stopping at Wal-Mart for a nice pellet gun and a case of beer or two.

Hang out till close to dark... oh yeah don't drink the beer yet or have a designated shooter (safety first ya know) and after it gets dark order a couple pizza's to be delivered to his address.

When the pizza arrives and everyone in the house is trying to straighten out the pizza mess have the shooter take out the light from a concealed location.

Drink the rest of the beer and enjoy the darkness!

Omg I feel your pain. I have been dealing with this problem for three years. They moved and left the flood lights. So now I have the renters putting the flood light from 8pm. Its' almost as if they are doing it on purpose. So I am going to fill a case in court. I am not going to deal with the renters I will deal with the owners. Just shame they can see how they light up my house.

Have across my patio window blonds open and i eveytime watch tv or eattong. His car brake tryimg get my atttention sittong car keep pishing his brake loght get my attention. Going through this now and I was able to take photos and submit to the City Prosecutors Office. We have no code in my city. Zoning couldn't do anything but, Prosecutor will mediate and then if not go from there as far as pressing charges.

I have this same problem now. I cant afford to hire a lawyer and i sent my husband to tell them how their light is affecting me but to no result. About 2 months after my husband said something to them i wrote a letter and stuck it in their mailbox. Still no result, so now every time they turn their light on i go out to my car and point the rear direcrly at their house. I open all the doors and trunk while blasting my music as loud as i can until they turn the light off. It works pretty well. I just have to do that everytime it comes on but everytime within a few mins of my music they will turn it off....sometimes you have to be just as disrepectful as they are.....
