I did find a goggle that stated that for every foot over 8 you should add another 3 inches. that would make it about 5 feet off the table. That does not make sense.

Again, it is most common to hang dining room chandeliers 36" from the top of the table. Obviously, with an 18ft. ceiling you're going to have one hell of a long chain.
