Same paint, different room?

Originally posted in the paint forum, thought I'd try it out here too.

I painted my bedroom BM Philipsburg Blue earlier this year. Thankfully I'm in love with the colour as DH thoughtfully bought 2 gallons. We ended up only needing 1.

being ever my thrifty self, I wanted to use some of the leftover paint to paint the 'den' (aka my library/pilates/reading/escape/computer room) but I don't particularly want two rooms exactly the same colour (is it only me that has this problem???).

Due to budget constraints I can't afford another gallon to avoid the same paint, two different room dilemma, but might be able to splurge for a quart for an accent.

Anyone have any suggestions for an accent colour (or something I can do to break it up) that will work with Philipsburg Blue? Its the BM Aura matte if that makes any difference (DH loathes shiny finishes).

Thank you!!

I am not a fan of accent walls, and even if I were, usually it it done with a darker color...lighter colors on the other three walls. That would speak to using the P'burg Blue on one wall which would necessitate another gallon of paint for the other three.

Are the rooms adjacent? If not, then using the same color isn't so bad. Do they get different light? If so, the color may present differently from one room to the other. It won't be a significant difference, but maybe it will be enough for you.

You could try to mix a quart of white base paint with the PB and see if you like the lighter blue. This would work better with a gallon of course and the price of a quart is almost halfway to the price of a gallon anyway.

You could leave the walls the way they are now and paint the ceiling with the PB. Bold, yes! Don't know what color the walls are now, so this may or may not work.

You could do something like painting wide stripes or do a faux finish that lets a lot of the existing color through. But, if you're going to go to all that trouble, the truth is you should put a fresh coat of paint on the walls anyway.

Honestly, I think you should save up until you can afford another gallon of a color you really like. Did you do two coats on the walls? If not, that's really how you should be using the "extra" paint.

What did you decide to do? I didn't see this thread when you posted. I was wondering if you could take it back to BM and get them to shoot a little more color in it to make it a bit different?

Have you thought of mixing your 2nd can of blue with another paint color you have laying around?

I have been doing that alot lately making my own colors with existing paint cans half empty I had around. I managed to mixed up my last 4 paint jobs with some pretty beautiful colors.

This may sound cheap but I am not cheap - just thrifty and environmental. I just painted my kitchen 2 days ago with a sandy orange color I mixed (yes everyone I painted my kitchen again for the 100th time LOL).

But if you did not want to do this for me I would do same color different room as long as they are on different floors...go for it. I have alot of tans in my home...they are different colors but they sure look the same...alls good...go for it. :)

I was recently given four gallons of a chiffon yellow (don't remember the actual name) BM paint. The color is a little too pastel for my tastes but it worked well on one small wall behind the sofa.

Problem is, we still had over 3.5 gallons of a paint color I wouldn't use in any other room. So I sent my husband to our local Ace Hardware who carries BM and had him ask them to add a little black. They suggested a touch of red as well. I was so pleased with the color that we painted the entire dining room and the master bedroom with it. The two rooms are a distance away and with different lighting so I would challenge anybody to tell me they were the same color.

And in the whole scheme of things, who cares if two rooms are the same color, unless of course it was an eye deafening color that screams its name like circus red or patriot blue. :-)

Jodi-with the exception of the kitchen, laundry, and boys rooms, my entire house is the same color because I LOVE it. It makes me happy. Simple as that. It changes so much throughout the day with the lighting. It's warm and easy. It's yellow, black, and magenta mixed. I'd love to see what yours looks like.

I still have a spare room and BR I'll paint something else, but it never occurred to me to paint every room differently.

Our paint is a Behr color but we had KM mix it. I believe it's called Warm Air.

You can get a quart of white paint (or any other color) for $5(the sample quarts) at Sherwin Williams and even cheaper if they have a sale. Or I agree that you could take it in and have more black or even more of another color added...or they can add 50% or 100% more of the same coloring for a much darker version.

DaniHoney, as it turns out, fellow Home Decor forum member Laurie_2008 has nearly the same color as I have on her dining room walls (she's a neighbor) but hers is an actual named color. It is BM Revere Pewter (HC-172) or perhaps right between that and Edgecomb Gray (HC-173) which is on the same color card.

danihoney, is your paint color called Warm Air or Calm Air? I had all of the public areas of my previous home painted in Behr Calm Air, and it was lovely! I was lucky enough to find almost a full gallon in the garage, and am in the midst of painting my foyer/stairway/upstairs hallway in it. Great color!

After I submitted that I thought "You know I think that was 'calm air' not warm air". I always describe it as "warm" so I believe you are right. I have never been happier with a color. It IS lovely.
I'm on DH's computer so I don't have any photo's here but I have a few that capture how the color changes with the changing light, it's beautiful. I have it in the master bed/bath and all the common areas except the kitchen.

I chose the color after going through ALL the color pictures on the galery here!

I responded to your thread on the Paint forum and see you haven't responded to either thread.

Curious what you ended up doing?

Just felt the need to chime in to say that for 17 YEARS the entire main level of my smallish home (entry,living/dining room, kitchen)has been Behr Calm Air. Only now am I ready for a change. Great, easy to live with colour:)
