Washing soda is sodium carbonate, also called soda ash.

I suppose you could get some heavy zipper bags and put it in there in your suitcase. (Is your suitcase packed THAT tight? LOL) How much do you need? If you need a lot, you can order it from a place like Chemistrystore.

Or I suppose you could mail it home too.

I have read that some common pool product is the same thing. I'm trying to find out exactly what the product is called and if the measurements are the same for using the pool product as using the washing soda.

Well, I'm back home now, but I really did consider throwing out something - I will probably never those dress shoes I took, just in case.

I did find a note in one of my checked bags that it had been searched. I wonder why they would have thought if they had found a baggie of white powder in there.

Also some hardware stores might have it. The Ace Hardware here does.

If you go to any pool supply store and ask for sodium carbonate or soda ash, they will know what you want.

As for if there's any difference in strength, I don't know for sure. Hopefully someone else here with more chemistry knowledge than I will check in and answer that for you.

what exactly do you use this for? instead of detergent?

It raises the PH in pools and is cheaper to buy it in the detergent aisle than the pool store.
