lizbeth-Yes, I've taken the pulls off and there is a tiny bit of fading, but not much at all.

I was so happy to find this dresser. It is in EXCELLENT condition! The shop where I got it had three nearly identical sets of furniture - this tall chest, a low dresser, headboard, and bedside table. Some people had a three bedroom home and must have had the same furniture in each bedroom! They donated it all to a thrift store that supports a local hospice. It's solid maple, made in Vermont.

If it's a high quality, made in Vermont maple piece, then the pulls are also high quality. That is a classic look, and I wouldn't buy new pulls just yet because it may grow on you.

Very nice dresser and solid maple and American made - gotta love that. My boys had a very similar one and it lasted for many years and now our grandson uses it. How about something really simple like this:

I wouldn't mess with it. I think it's lovely as is BUT it's your call. If you do remove the handles put them in a zip lock with a pic of the piece on it. You might find as the kids grow up you want the original look back.

Really nice little chest. If you like another look, run down to the hardware store with one of the current pulls in hand and find something you think you may like. Keep your receipt, bring home and try a couple on one drawer.

cattknap - I would love to just use knobs instead of pulls but there are two holes for the pulls so I don't think knobs are an option...right? The two holes from the original hardware would be exposed?

Nice dresser! Drawer pulls are measured center to center so you will be limited to the same size as are on there now unless you want to fill holes which I wouldn't recommend as you are not painting this piece and it would be almost impossible to hide the holes. Of course you could use very plain plate pulls or escutcheons. Same problem with the holes if you go to knobs.

Two of my favorite sites for hardware are "Lee Valley" and "Anthropologie" altho they are both expensive. If you don't want to pay those prices then Home Depot or other big box hardware stores usually carry less expensive in similar styles.

I usually buy my drawer pulls in second hand venues but then I'm looking for vintage not modern.

What about painting the current pulls black or bronze?

Do not paint the current pulls. If you really can't learn to love then, take them off and store them someplace safe. Find other pulls that fit the holes. It looks like a high-quality piece. By the time your child has children that will be an antique...and how many times have we heard those twins on the Antiques Road Show say "But if it had the original pulls"...

Oh boy, those pulls are a classic look for that gorgeous dresser...I love the pulls...I bought 4 chippendale
pulls similar to yours at a yard sale and made bedroom end tables around these pulls. They were my inspiration.

Don't rush into changing them, maybe they'll grow on you,
if not please email me, I can think of several things we
could make around those pulls.

what color is your son's bed or other furniture?
if it's for a 2 yr old's room, i'd pretty much forget aesthetics, and go for something more oriented to a toddler...
something whimsical, fun...or something to make it pop, like white.
definitely hold onto the orig handles, though...
and do not paint them. :)

That's a GREAT dresser and I love vintage pulls but sorry, I CANNOT stand those little eagles and they're not the type that will add worth in the future (IMHO). I broke the backs off and just used the pulls with the little screw in eyelets. I can give you directions if you're interested. Although I think black bin pulls would like nice for a boys room. Just make sure that you measure between the holes. Most bin pulls come with screws so you'd need to replace them with bolts in order to not make extra holes. A little black paint (or a magic marker if I'm really lazy) and you're set to go. I love looking at, choosing hardware, my local RESTORE has tons of it at reasonable prices. Have fun.

What do ya'll think of something like this....it would keep in line with the vintage/antique look, but would be less scroll-y...that is what I don't like about the current pulls, the scrolly back plate thing. The color is "Dark Antique Copper"

Our little chest is like yours but it came from Canada. It was old when DH was given it 45 yrs or so ago by his mentor who was from Edmonton Alberta. We love it . I store linens in it. Yours is a beauty. c

Jaysmom - that is exactly what I was hoping to do - take the plate off but keep the handle part, but it appears to be all attached/one piece. I don't think I want to damage the original hardware. I did find some things that look like the handle without the back plate thing (similar to what I posted above) which would probably give me the same look as what you describe. I might try the bin pulls too. Those are easy to find and I could just throw a couple on there to see what it looks like.

While I sympathize with the antique lovers here, I have to agree that different hardware would really transform that to a more up to date style since the dresser itself is quite neutral. I'd agree about hanging onto the originals (the Keno bros will get off your shoulders), but I think the cup bin pulls that yayagirl linked above would be great for a child's room if the hole spacing fits. Of course, that's assuming the rest of your home and/or room goes with that. Nice find on the dresser!

I just read that your thrift had several other pieces like this one. I'd run back and get another! I bought a similar rock maple, made in USA bureau for my son's room 15 years ago, and appreciate it more every time I see a newer one with wonky drawers and cheap construction. I found that one in a thrift, and would love to have another, but they aren't exactly a dime a dozen.

sonic, I would LOVE another one, especially the lower 3-drawer dresser but we just don't have the room for it (to use or to store). Plus, I'm guessing they are gone by now...we tried to go back the next day for the matching bedside table, but both were gone already.

I like the idea above of black cups, as mentioned above. I'm seeing several of the cup style pulls on overstock.com. Assuming the holes line up . . .

It looks like "Ethan Allen by Baumritter" from the 50's. It's all solid heavy hard rock maple, and indestructible. Their pulls are brass plated, but the plating is so thick that I have been able to strip off the lacquer, polish them to bright brass, and then lacquer them, on a 12-drawer dresser that I inherited.
This stuff lasts generations. It will never amount to anything antique-wise, but it is functional and handsome in its own way.

I really like the detail of your piece. And would consider changing the pulls too. But the chest has those wonderful accents at the top for something unique. Link below offers many antique options, perhaps peruse and see some ideas. I've been wanting to add file plates to my kitchen. A bit off the wall, but have always thought they had a lot of uses.

That's a really beautiful dresser. What a find! I agree with some others that say you might want to wait and see if the pulls grow on you. I bought a 1940s mahogany bow front sideboard with aged brass pulls. At first I disliked them and thought for sure I'd replace them. After realizing the size of the pull was a little unusual (3.5" if I remember correctly) I waited a while and now the original pulls have really grown on me. Definitely do not paint the pulls and if you do replace them, save the originals. I think cup pulls could look really nice, but what you have there is beautiful too.

Thanks everyone! I wanted to give a little update, since some of you seem interested....One of the drawers is stamped "Vermont of Winooski, Solid Rock Maple, Whipple House Group" Of course, I googled :-) Found the ad linked below....cool!

As far as the pulls...I am leaning more and more toward leaving them as-is. The top three drawers, which are smaller, have smaller handles than the other drawers. So I'd have to find matching cup pulls that are available in both sizes. I'm going to look once more at a local hardware place, but if I can't find something there I might just call it a day. I don't hate the current pulls THAT much.

If I do end up changing the pulls I'll post a picture! You all have been so helpful I might just hit you up for some advice with the rest of this room....it needs to be tied up, brought together, etc. with art, bedding, window treatments, and possibly a rug. But the room is so small and the furniture so big (we're using what we have instead of buying all new, so that is limiting) that there ia definitely some akwardness going on.

Refinished a vanity (now used as a changing table) and a nightstand with very similar style and almost identical hardware to your piece and used these oil rubbed bronze cup cabinet pulls from overstock.com. Both are painted white with a dark brown stained top, and the pulls look fabulous! Not suggesting you paint your dresser since yours has a great finish, but just wanted to comment that the cup pulls worked well for us. However, all of our pulls were the same size, so we didn't have an issue there.

Practically anything traditional and not too out-there will look good with that dresser. I have a similar one and I don't like the pulls either but I am too lazy to try and find replacements . . .

I do hope you will keep the original hardware. The chest is beautiful and will last for many lifetimes! You did well!

ETA: This is why I still haunt our local consignment shops. The older furniture is just excellent in both materials and craftsmanship. What a lovely, lovely piece!

I know this is an old thread but had to comment that I have my mom's old furniture and it has similar hardware. I love that it was free but wanted something a little more modern and was searching the internet to see what was out there. I ran across the same drawer pulls I already had and they were $8-9 each. I decided I would learn to like them. :)
