Advice? Testimonials?

Hello,

About 90% sure will sign on with Home Depot to remodel our kitchen, using Thomasville Eden cabinets, and quartz countertops. I have not seen any recent (this past year) posts related to HD or Thomasville cabinets.

Any advice, cautions? Meanwhile, I will explore how to upload pics as we're doing a major redo of a 1970s kitchen. Very exciting!

Thanks all

Make sure that YOU measure your space and measure out the design to be sure it will fit. Do NOT trust that they will have the right info. Verify yourself. Thomasville are decent cabinets, but HD designers are a hit and miss lot, as are their installers. HD's labor is also sky high, especially if you need any electrical or plumbing done. You are better off finding your own contractor for the install, as long as he has good cabinet install experience and meets with the KD to go over the design before your order it. Inexperienced cabinet people there have a tendency to design something that only works in a make believe world and not real life.

We bought our InnerMost cabinets from HD this last fall, but we did all the measurement and installation ourselves. We were very happy with the service and InnerMost's response to a difficulty with a drawer we had. We were especially pleased with the design process - we knew what we wanted, they had the computer program. I think this is dependent on the person who helps you, though. Once in a different HD than where we ordered, we wanted to ask a question about some facet of our cabinets. The guy there clearly knew nothing about them except they were "expensive." Our particular salesperson was also an expert user on their design program and had actually helped design it. I'm sure those things make a difference.

As holly said, be sure to measure, measure, measure. We measured, designed, measured again, adjusted, and did it all again. And again. Every inch matters. Double check that every door and drawer can actually open. The drawers under the peninsula needed extra space against the wall in order to clear the door trim. The utility closet door needed a bit of filler next to the wall so it would open properly. We turned a 15" set of drawers into a 14" set because we needed the extra inch down at the end for a door to open. The new pantry came close enough to the patio door that the patio light switch didn't have room on the wall - remember that there is a double stud next to a door like that and a light switch needs to go on that stud away from the door. Since we didn't have room there anymore, we installed it in the side of the pantry instead. Do not skimp on the time it takes to measure and order the right stuff in the right sizes. Don't figure the HD people will care nearly as much as you do. Even if there's a "great deal" on some feature of your cabinetry, don't sign until you know you have it right.

I agree. They will put fillers instead of being creative so you have to know your stuff with HD. You will have a 50/50 chance of having a good install or a nightmare. Good luck.

In my area the KDs at Home Depot have been kind of snarky and dismissive when I walk in and say I want to finalize a kitchen design, and maybe place an order that day. I have done this three times for clients and had the same experience three times.

    HOWEVER,
Once I pull out my drawings and show that I have good, complete measurements, they have always been really accommodating. On their part, they do get a lot of people who come in with incomplete, inaccurate measurements who don't get why the designer can't plan their kitchen.

Sure enough when I was there, a woman came in and pulled out a ragged piece of paper that had two dimensions on it, and doors and windows marked in rough locations.

So the more clear and complete your measurements are, the better foot you will be starting on with your KD.

Good luck on your remodel! Looking forward to before and after pics. I also have a 1970's kitchen we'll be remodeling (or at least updating) soon. Is yours harvest gold too?

We worked with Home Depot for our kitchen cabinets and the whole process was flawless. They measured, delivered, installed. Everyone was very pleasant and efficient. The cabinets are Thomasville, maple, stained whiskey black. We upgraded to plywood boxes and all the cabs have rollouts. They have been in for about a year and are in great shape despite heavy & careless use. We got in on both store and manufacturers discounts so the cost was about $360. per foot installed.
I have linked a photo of the cabinets. In it you can see that we have an unusual angle that was going to be skinned over. The installer was very flexible and accommodating when I asked him to leave it open. We ended up using wedges from the wooden counter tops to make shelves.

Agree on the comments about HD. They'll crank out designs without thought to flow or functionality. We got designs from HD and Lowes. One thing I didn't like is that they try to fill up every inch of available space even if it's not really needed. Not surprising since their profit comes from selling more cabinets. We still got the cabinets from HD but took care of most of the details ourselves. They were pretty good about letting us make multiple appointments to finalize our design.

Thomasville Cabinets are made by MasterBrand. They are exactly same as Diamond (from Lowes) and Schrock. We didn't have any issues with the cabinets we ordered. One minor problem was when we had to go back and order an additional filler piece. The part we got was maple instead of cherry like our cabinets. By the time we noticed, it was already installed so we had to live with it.

For quartz, if you're looking at Silestone, try to see if there are any fabricators in your area. The fabricators aren't allowed to solicit for business I believe but they can sell to you if you go to them. We got ours from one and they gave us a price that was $20/sq ft cheaper than HD.
