New Kitchen Decorating

Hi Everyone,

I am struggling with decorating a couple of spots in my remodeled kitchen. We finished late summer/early fall, and I just can't figure out what to do in these trouble spots.

1. Under the island. I have various things I could use: cookbooks, baskets of multiple sizes, bowls, canisters, vases, etc. I currently have a square basket containing kitchen towels/washcloths/placemats, and a wine rack. (I'd like to get the wine out of the kitchen due to temperature fluctuations.) I've put my mixer down there for a while, but it's hard to lift out and get back underneath. We've also tried storing our black espresso machine there, but I think I need some color. I mostly have blues, greens and reds elsewhere and in items I can use. I'm open to new ideas!!

2. The end of the lower cabinets to the left of the island. I'm thinking a tiny bookcase or tiny table or some such thing for that space. I could store cookbooks maybe or use it for additional display? The approximate size is 36" tall, 22" wide and 12" to 14" deep at most.

All suggestions and ideas are appreciated.

GREAT looking kitchen! :) Really wonderful! :)

For your cookbooks -- I'd add some tall white Ikea Billy cabinets on the open wall for your cookbooks. And if you get one with a closed bottom cabinets -- it might even hold your mixer!

And I'd add a white backless saddle-seat stool under the end of the island.

How about trying a stack of colorful bowls? Or perhaps colorful lined baskets (you could even add fun tags to the baskets!)

Thanks, teacats!! While I love the ideas you've suggested, we do have counter stools already - I had just pulled them aside so I could get clear pics of the island.

When the counter stools are in use, there is only about 26" between the back of the stool and that wall to the right. So while I would LOVE LOVE LOVE billy bookcases on that right wall, there isn't room. :(

Appreciate the bowls and baskets suggestions!

I think your kitchen looks terrific! I like your idea of the small bookcase at the end of one kitchen cabinet run (altho' it looks like that may be a pet dining area?) A wall-mounted wine rack (Ikea and lots of other choices) would not get the wine out of the kitchen, but it would get it off of the island. I don't see any particular need to add color to the island. I'd store whatever is practical and looks good - maybe even large pots, colanders, and the like.

I'd keep my Le Creuset collection under the island. You could also put one of those cool French pot racks at the end of the cabinet run.

Oh boy, you notice a theme going on here?! :-)

    Gorgeous kitchen, btw!!

Lovely kitchen - hope you are enjoying

I like the idea of continuing to use color throughout the space. You have a few orange things which compliment the flooring, and the trim around the window - as well as yellow ware (lovely) - Try finding ordinary orange and yellow around the house & just place them leave them see if you like where that may take you

A fabric window shade with your color scheme
A nice wool runner in front of the sink
an orange tea kettle or le Crueset on the stove top

Thanks for the additional thoughts and compliments. I must confess, these pics are from October, so the orange touches were for really for fall only - they're not my usual colors. Although I'm not opposed to orange and it does seem to work okay in this space.

I am working on finding a window treatment, and hope to have that installed soon, and have been shopping for a rug for in front of the sink. I have a hard time finding things I like, so it is taking me a while to get things done in here!
