Here's a reply from the northeast. I really don't know what was popular in Indiana. You did have a fine stained glass manufacturer in Kokomo, though. Perhaps there is a relationship between the builder or owner of your house and a stained glass company.

I have seen a small and beautiful stained glass window in a chimney in a plush, exclusive country club north of Boston, built about 1925. The chimney flues ran on either side and the stained glass window, (which faced south and got lots of sun, really wonderful) was directly above the fire place opening.

strife_rat, I'd really like to see your window in the chimney. Can you post a pic? It sounds like a rare feature to me, but I'm no expert.

Mark Twain's house in Connecticut has windows on each side of the chimney flue on the inside of the house.(I can't remember if they were stain glass or not) It was Twain's wife who insisted the windows be done like that since having a full solid wall would have made the foyer of the house too dark.
