Is the dust over?

Hi all...

Its only been a few weeks (going into week 4 of the remodel) but I can't take all the disorder anymore! Right now all the demo/sheetrock is over, electric & plumbing done, cabinets are up, floor is in, trim is all in, hardware in, stove/micro installed, lighting done.

Waiting only on granite (supposed to come this week) sink/faucet installation, dishwasher & fridge to get hooked up & paint & backsplash. I'm pretty sure that is all that is left? So can I get rid of the plastic sheeting that is everywhere (& covered in dust)? Can I start putting things back in cabinets? I feel like my old kitchen has managed to overrun most of the rooms in my house lol & I need to get it back in the kitchen!

Is it time or too early? I'm SO ready for this to be over - I don't know how people who have major work do this & live in the house long term!!

I feel the same way. We are finally complete with the sheet rock up and starting on the floor. I can't take the dust anymore. It has taken over the house and I can't seem to get rid of it. When will it finally go away?

I think in your phase of the renovation the dust should be no longer.

I'm right there with you. I'm only a few days in, and I'm going crazy already. Plus, I had my chimney taken out so I'm w/o a hot water heater until Monday. I'm trying to keep my eye on the prize, but I'm not doing too well with that. (Hence the wine last night)

I was right about where you were when I started putting things back together. Go ahead and take down your plastic sheeting. But...I would seriously consider waiting on the dishwasher and plumbing to be hooked up before putting all your stuff back in cabinets. I found dust had permeated every box and I had to wash absolutely everything before it could be put in the cabinets. Also had to dust/wash all the insides of the cabinets first too.

So, unless you have a good temp sink where you can wash everything, or if you're luckier than me and all your stuff didn't get super dusty too, I'd hold off until you can easily wash items.

Good luck! You're in the home stretch...not long now!

After the granite, that should be about it for the dust. I know you are anxious to get back to normal!

    I can empathize!

That room in the background with the lights on is the one refuge we have all day long! Though it means no more progress for the moment, it's a relief to have the workers leave.

The dust will not stop until it's finished. Trust me. I kept saying everyday this has got to be the worst of it and then, something else. We even had a floor to ceiling plywood wall between our dining area and kitchen the whole time. I don't know where the dust even came from!

I thought someone told me that there is even some dust involved with the granite installation so you might want to wait with filling your cabinets until after that...

I've been damp mopping. That seems to help. My dust should be over now. I painted today ;-)
Won't this dust be like Christmas tree needles that you find in July?

Fun post. I am on my 5th week. The insulators/tapers/mud guys were pretty flakey. Showed up when they felt like it. I am over 2 weeks without laundry or sink. My sister in Michigan says that the general consensus up there is that the taper mud boys are "squirrelly". Yup! The dust is intense. Good question "Is it over?" I would imagine that the worst is these tapers. But I'm not putting anything back until it is all done. All my herbed salt, sugar, flour, etc. I'm going to throw out because everything must have dust in it. And I would imagine "you should wait for the dust to settle."

I'm at the same stage as you and I just took off my plastic and vacuumed around the doors. It felt soooo good to get that plastic off the doorways, we are now able to walk around the house in our normal pathways! I still have plastic covering my dining room furniture and blankets over the doors to minimize the air flow to the other rooms so hopefully that will help with the rest of the dust that will happen during the finish. I just couldn't take the plastic doorways anymore! I'm probably going to regret it though. On to the wine!
