This is a tough one. If you want to use it for storage you will have to come up with a cover up of some sort. I am thinking either large baskets to hold things that would slide under the steps or make some sort of cover to hide the storage.

Close it in, it is awkward.

I couldn't give up the space..the carpenters answer is the "Happy Medium"...close the front side flush with surrounding wall and put a frame holding two cabinet doors...holding items used once or twice a year..you could place furniture in front of the doors if needed

post a picture that shows ore of the area if possible-if it were my space I would build a large bench that extends only a few inches out in the front where you are looking at the stair landing with a door either sliding to the right or simply droppind down to use as under stair storage. The other side of the bench moving towards the right of the piture I would extend out 24 inches or so and add a seat cushion, I can't tell if that is a window or cut out in the wall on the right we can see thru? But, that is my idea-combo bench front opening storage.

I agree, build in a cabinet.

When I was little, I loved the tiny room with the slanted door and slanted ceiling under the stairs where junk was stored - well, not junk really: out of season gear: ice skates in summer and rollerskates in winter, sandals and galoshes, and some junk, too. The drawers are probably much more practicable, though I still like the little door - more odd sized larger objects can be stored. If he doesn't own the house, big baskets are a good option.

I will post a few more photos to show how this is next to the walk through to kitchen and that the stairs start from dining area with pantry closet right next stairs so its all a bit awkwardly set up but it's an 11 year old town house that needs some upgrades just trying to do it one project at a time!

I think a cabinet would be the best use of space. Although I did see a picture once where someone had created an indoor dog house out of an area like that!

So we spent the weekend moving my stuff in and just thought I would give an updated image to inspire an inexpensive storage solutions for weird space under stairs I do like the plain cabinet idea just need to start unpacking and needing the storage space :/)

Looks like that space is right next to your TV area; close it in neatly and have a canvas painting hanging over it so no one can know its storage space
