Have you looked on eBay or Craigslist? Or snooped around online?

I am usually an ace at online shopping. I've spent hours--literally--looking online! I have found nice square fixtures, but nothing rectangular. And I'm frustrated that I can't find a way to search either for the shape of the fixture that I want (rectangular), or for the amount of light/wattage/lumens (lots) that I need. So far, the only rectangular fixtures I have found are florescent with acrylic diffusers, and I need a lot more style than that!

I was hoping that someone on this forum had a trick for searching for lighting, because I am all out of tricks.

Oh boy lynnski, that's a tough one. I've been looking at lamp sites for awhile updating my house and I don't remember seeing anything like that. I googled Lamps and came up with tons of places to search. I purchased lamps from Lampsplus and Bellacor with no problems.

Can you split it up into two square lamps? Is there a specific reason why it has to be rectangle? I found most of the choices are round.

I bought a modern ceiling light from Form Plus Function, linked below. This site, along with many other modern lighting sites, do not typically appear on search return results. These meet your criteria:

Aquarius There is a polka dot one as well

Vision

And then there is a Hubbardton Forge one

I actually saw some of these in person and they were spectacular. The company gives you the choice of fabrics for shades.

Very modern and very in. Go to the stores themselves. The prices will be better.

mqmoi--Those are great--thank you! I love the Hubbarton Forge fixture, but HF is way out of my price range right now. I like the Aquarius with polka dots. Do you have that one in your home in checkerboard? Does it give a lot of ambient light? The bulb is a 100W 120V Halogen T3. How is that working for you? Does the steel panel produce any odd (checkerboard-ish) shadows?

sky--I think the reason most ceiling lights are round (or even square) is the assumption that the electrical box is in the center of the room. In my case, the box is at the edge of the room, and I want a rectangular fixture to suggest the edge of the kitchen, which is really an "imaginary edge" because it is all an open plan. That's a lot to ask of a ceiling fixture! But the rectangular shape is very important to my plan.

You're welcome. I have the Quattro, which I'm happy with but I didn't link to because it is round. Ditto, about the HR, which is why I didn't even bother to link.

Here is a site from a bookmark I found in my "Lighting" folder. Nulco has beautiful, quality lighting but $$:
