Prep sink cover

Does anyone use a cover for their prep sink? Mine will be in my 52x40 inch island (no other place for it) and there are times when I think I would want to also use that space for other type of prep work. I will have an undermount so I thought if I use a postive reveal on it I could get a cutting board to fit flush using the lip of the reveal to hold it up. I would love to hear (and see) tried and true or other creative solutions.

thanks

I can't believe no one has a picture of a prep sink cover on their island. I want to see pics too (so I'm helping bump this back to the top)

On all of our boats the galley sinks have covers. They are the cut out piece. I asked our granite guy if he could do that for us and he said that since the granite is so thick, the piece would weigh more than I could handle trying to pull it out or putting it back. Could end up chipping the edge putting it back.

Then I told my husband that I wanted him to make a cutting board to fit. He said my island was large enough that I didn't need the extra room but I still would like one.

The counters on the boat are a solid surface and not as thick or heavy. They each have a one inch hole in them to pull it out.

    Good luck to you.

We picked the Kohler 5-sided sink for our prep sink, and it had a grid and cutting board that fits over the sink as accessories, so we ordered them too. We use the grid all the time, but the cutting board never. The board might be a good idea if space is really tight, but this turned out to be the one item that we don't use. (We use plenty of cutting boards, just not over the prep sink.)

My dad made us two - one of cherry that's a full cover and matches the cabinets, and one maple half-circle for chopping/prepping. The full one has two fingerholes for easy removal.

    Prep sink sans cover:

These are great - thanks so much for the pics!

Circuspeanut - how much reveal do you have on your undermount?

It's a shade less than 1/4". Needn't be too much, really, as long as it's consistent around the sink.

Good luck! I love the covers, great functionality for us.

Glad to hear it from you firsthand!

    I agree covers are great.

A removable top, or a folding-over top, would serve a market too.
    Residential:
multi use spaces, islands, peninsulas, wherever there's a second sink.
    Commercial:
clinics, wherever they have rows of counters.

It does surprise me that nobody ever mentions this here.
    Almost nobody. Yet!

I've planned for a Kohler Poise cutting board to go inside my counter cutout. Not bought yet.

I think there are good reasons to want to cover the sink, either halfway or all the way.

Here is mine. I made sure the carpenter kept the hole cutout from the sink when he cut our butcher block top. I haven't oiled it yet, though.

I've always wondered if peolple ever turn on the faucet with the cover in the way. Is that an issue?

Beejay, that thought crossed my mind, too, esp. with our full cover -- but it turns out that the cover is loose enough that the water just flows around it down into the sink. So no problem!

Hard to tell from a photo, but the water just flows down around the edges and doesn't get on the counter. Viz:

Well that is just fun, Circuspeanut! I think I might turn the water on for entertainment at parties or when I'm bored! ;-)

Way to go! Always thinking! Congratulations circuspeanut!

Ha. My camera has a mini-video mode for real live action, but I thought that would be just too much excitement for a Tuesday.
