Why does this look wrong? Pictures attached...

I have had this pottery barn metal tree waiting to be hung for ages. I think I had it leaning on this wall so long I convinced myself it looked good there. Now that it is hung it looks strange to me. This is the view from my side door when you first walk in. Do I need to try something else there? Ahhhh..Thanks!

I think it would look better hung beneath your wall words.

How about a simple long wall mirror to extend space and add light?

I agree with Dee. A mirror where the tree is now would look great

Another vote for under the words...

You can find great mirrors at Homegoods.

How much space is there on that back wall? I see there is a door to the right. Do you have room for a really skinny console table? A mirror hung over a little table would look nice.

I think it would look good with your word wall, but it also looks fine where it is. It just needs something to ground it to the space. Do you have a small, but tall table or a narrow table you could put under it? I am not a fan of mirrors unless they reflect something pretty and most halls are utilitarian. Unless it would reflect a lovely room at the spot where you took the picture, I would not choose a mirror.

What about putting a trunk on it? Either a painted or a 3 dimensional one.
Or hang a row of hooks under it? Do you need a place to hang coats or bags?

It looks wrong because it is just floating on the wall and has little substance - it either needs something to anchor it such as a piece of furniture or needs to be paired with another wall decor item.

    UPDATE...Thank you all!!!

I have 3 black & white pictures of my kids & husband ready to be hung under the Wall Words.

My back when taking the picture was to my back door. And the stairs on the right (with the baby gate) go to the basement. And the room with the thermostat is the family room.

I am so bad with hanging things on the walls. I have many a bare walls in my house. I am so afraid to make mistakes.

Would any one pretty please mind photo shopping a mirror or picture on that wall? Or a table under the metal tree?

    Thanks so much!!!

Agree with lucky gal. It looks odd bc it's just floating there.

Maybe try a shallow console table under it.

I'd try putting the tree high on the wall, just a few inches shy of the ceiling, and hang a framed full-length mirror under it - one that isn't too narrow. You can get them at Lowes or Target, too.

A hallway that's a dead end is one of those subtle things that make people a little uncomfortable, and a mirror solves that very neatly.

I have a table my husband made but never finished under it, not sure it is any better? What do you think?

Here's a quick mock-up. Try to ignore the style of the actual console table and mirror - I just grabbed the first ones I found that were photographed from the right angle.

the table does not make the tree look any better in your last pic, zoey75. How about putting a nice sized mirror where the tree is, and then moving the tree lower, or even leaning it on the table.

Thanks again for all your help! I think it is safe to say that this does not work here. Guess I will have two holes in the wall until I figure something out. Boo hoo. . . Any ideas where the metal tree would work?

I think it would work well on any wall that is wider. The tree is wider than it is tall, so it looked "trapped" in that narrow little alcove. It's very nice and will look great somewhere else! The table will look good there with some decor on it. I personally do not use mirrors for decorating I hate seeing my reflection all the time... but if you like mirrors, it would look good to have one there.

I normally am against hanging things high, but try the tree above the lettering with the family pics below. It might work with a nod to a family tree :)

I think it is one of those items that has to be used in conjunction with other items, as it is very small. I like it used with the lettering, but honestly, I probably would stick it in a bookcase as a prop for other items.

I thought I would like it under your lettering... but when I see it there, the looks distracting -- too much too look at with the letters and the branches.

But then again, I'm sitting here staring at it.

There has to be another place you can use it....

How many children do you have? Three black and white photos in matching frames would look great under your lettering.
They would need to fill the width of the space below.

As others have said, it needs to be hung with something else, and it'll help if the colors tie in somewhat. I do think that the tree may look a little cramped in the hall, but IMHO the reason it doesn't work with the table is primarily because the distance between the table and the tree is greater than the height of the tree. When making a grouping, you want the objects to be viewed as a unit, not separately...so it helps to keep the space between the items smaller. Also the colors are quite different without any objects on the table to tie them together. When this info was shared with me years ago, it really helped me in grouping objects so hope it helps you.

Could you try the table you husband made then put the tree lower... a couple inches above the tree and then small family pictures above the tree....like a family tree sort of thing. Could be your childrens pictures or other family pictures.

I think the table, the tree, the pictures will look a bit cluttered in such a small space.
I believe we can find a better place for the tree. It is a nice piece, but it could be put away until she finds the "perfect" place for it. I have done that many times before, find something I like, buy it and then cannot use it and put it away and one day I am trying to form a composition and need something and "bingo," that piece is just the perfect item. I think using it for the sake of using it, is not fair to the piece or to the space it occupies if it does not work.

Thank you all so much for so many great ideas. I took the metal tree down since it gave me anixety to look at it floating there, lol. I will put it away to I find that perfect spot. I put the table back in my husband's workshop to be finished (it has a matching bench too).

I think I would get some of those narrow picture rail/shelves. Stack two or three of them on the wall. Then you could frame some of your kids art work or family photos on that wall. You could stagger them or line them up on top of each other. The bonus will be that the horizontal lines of the shelving will widen the hallway making it feel more spacious. You could also add additional lighting to the wall. Whatever you do don't do a mirror, like someone else said a mirror should reflect a view. A mirror will also make your hallway look narrow and long.
