Preliminary Kitchen Thoughts

DW and I have found a nice plan designed by Summerfield and would appreciate your thoughts on the kitchen layout. We're empty nesters and both share in the cooking and cleaning up duties. We'll entertain family and friends occasionally and will host the usual large family gatherings for the Holidays. We are planning on Maple Cabinets and Stainless Steel Appliances, perhaps a different colored island (not exactly sure yet). We'll have a dual-fuel gas range (no wall ovens). The refridge will be a standard depth French Door model. And I have no idea where to locate a Microwave and we're not sure about where to locate the gas range, keep it in the island or not? I would really appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

That's a nice plan, especially the master suite with the huge closet and ensuite. And the great pantry off the kitchen!

Tough kitchen itself though as it doesn't seem like there's an obvious 'natural' place for the range. Is it possible to move the window? If so I'd consider sliding the window toward the pantry and moving the sink left with it, and putting the range near where the rhs of the window is shown now.

I'd put a drawer micro into the island at the side by the fridge. And make sure you have the base counter depth increased to about 30" or so at the fridge run so that your standard depth fridge looks more built in. You have a great space on that fridge run to do so.

Good luck and have fun with your new build!

Thanks taggie. Great inputs! We might also close off the pantry from the Laundry.

    Anybody else?

I agree with everything Taggie said, except I might put the microwave, next to the fridge (where you have the ovens now) and keep the island open for prep and baking. It just depends on where you like your microwave...under counter or above the counter.

As for the pantry, maybe put a pocket door to the laundry room, but I wouldn't close it off, completely. The laundry room is a great place to keep your cleaning supplies. It also allows you to access the kitchen, from the mud room, without walking on the living room or hall carpet (if you plan to have any).

Nice plan DR, I can see why you and your wife like it! Summerfield is the best :)

Lavender - Thanks. DW and I both agree that we need to move the range to where the ovens are or to the back wall. If we do that, we'd slide the window and sink and dw one way or the other and possibly go with a OTR microwave...not sure on that one yet. Then the Fridge goes to wall where the wall ovens are shown. As for the the pantry, DW wants that back wall closed off to give us more workable wall space in both the laundry and pantry and then we can keep our dog and his food/water bowls in the laundry or mud room when we run errands and it'll keep him out of the pantry area. And we'll have tile in mud room and if we're using our mud room the way it's designed, we shouldn't be tracking in too much mud through the house...right:)?

We love the plan. You're right, Summerfield is the best!

You might want to see the kitchen in 3d views before committing to it. I think the alignments of dw-to-cooktop, hood-to-window might be annoying - one visual and one practical. With a grill, I'd like an actual hood, not a downdraft of any kind. It looks like you could slide sink-plus-window to either side.

Consider - just cause it might be nicer to work with - perhaps de-centering the cooktop and sliding it towards one side with a prep sink. Then you wouldn't have to cross back and forth carrying pots full of water - sometimes boiling water! It might also be a way to get more prep counter in a single run.

I can definitely see why there is a connection between laundry and pantry. I think that would be my normal route when carrying in groceries. It's so far away when carrying bags, I'd resent having to tote them around the corner and back.

I might think through the ins and outs of combining the laundry and mudroom together. It's kinda attractive as it would make a room big enough for sewing, occasional sloppy kid projects and perhaps a pet washing area.

In any case, I'd look at the door collision at the garage entrance with the closet. Maybe you don't need the closet? Or maybe the closet will have such little use that it will be ok?

bmorepanic - Thanks. The floorplan drawings were done by Summerfield for another member of GW. I have just adopted them and they haven't gone to our draftsman yet to incorporate any of our changes as we just stumbled upon the plan yesterday.

We don't plan on using a grill on the stove top, just a simple 4-burner 30in gas range. Sliding the sink and d-w and window and locating the range on that wall would take care of the boiling water scenario. Then we could locate the fridge and microwave where the wall ovens are drawn if we didn't opt for an OTR microwave but we'll have our kitchen designer do a couple of mock-ups before deciding.

On the pantry-laundry door issue, I'll let the boss (DW) decide. Personally, I like it open but it's all about compromises right?

I like the separation of laundry and mudroom the way it's drawn but you raise a good point If we had little ones. Perhaps grandkids one day?

Good input on the door collision at the garage entrance. Will take a look at that. Thanks again.

In the mud room, just change the door swing, so it opens against the wall instead of the closet. Personally, I prefer a bench and hooks (easier to access) but it depends on your storage needs. If it would fit, a dog washing area does sound like a nice idea.

As for the separation, probably a smart move to let the boss decide (LOL) but with the odd angle of the pantry, you might lose storage in those coners, while gaining a bit on the wall. I'd ask the designer about it, too. A nice door would keep 'dog' contained when necessary, but still allow you to access the space more easily.

Here'a my bench picture and a few laundry pictures...just in case you're still looking for inspiration :) {{gwi:1444647}}From Lavender Lass farmhouse pictures

One other thing...I love this picture (probably because it looks like spring, after a long winter) but is you notice the windows, the right one is over the sink, range in the middle, with another window to the left. From a distance it looks very balanced, with the island. Just another idea...

re: OTR microwave: many here aren't fans of an OTR MW for a few reasons: the pull of the fan isn't very strong (and I think they just recirculate, not vent to the outside? not sure); you have to reach over the cooktop to use the MW (possible burn hazard); and finally when you pull hot stuff out of the MW it's right in your face.

I'd look at a drawer MW that could go in your island or under any counter. We love ours because it holds alot and it keeps the counter clear.

If you don't use a MW frequently, your fabulous pantry would be a great place for a countertop MW on a shelf (as well as other appliances like blender, toaster, mixer, etc., so you can keep your kitchen counters clear.)

chicagoans - Do you have link for your drawer MW? We considered that but to be honest, don't know too much about them. Thanks.

Lavender - Thanks for the idea on the door swing and the inspirational pics. I like the pic of the dual windows flanking the range but it takes away all the upper cabinet spaces... crucial real estate for DW:)

Hi DC - ours is a Sharp which at least a few other GWers have as well. (And maybe other brands are rebranded versions of the Sharp? Can't remember.)

    Anyway, there's a link below.

I cannot for the life of me find the fridge in the plan you posted.... I see a freezer off the kitchen but don't see the actual day to day fridge....

We put our micro on a shelf above the counter but only installed it 13" off the counter so it is lower than an OTR model. Our kids were 8 & 9.5 at the time of installation and we wanted that height and taller to be able to access it. It helps put it out of reach for younger ones. It was important not to be too high because I did not want anything coming down and potentially sloshing onto the person below. It also has its own landing zone in front and beneath it as it does not come out as far as the front of the counter. We keep our toaster directly below it, so it is a good snack area and out of the way of the real cook.
I'd put it to the right of the sink in your plan above because that is near the table. I know you may be moving things around, but I'd save the end of that cab run for the micro and toaster, unless you put the fridge there.

Another reason to get the shelf instead of a built in is because micros don't last forever, and we can always swap it out for another model without doing anything but unplugging the old and plugging the new one in.

We got our shelf from the place below.
