Calling All Cottage Home Lovers - What Interior Doors & Knobs

What type of interior doors should be used in a cottage style home? We are going with a masonite mdf type door that will be painted white. I was thinking of a recessed square 2 panel or a shaker style 3 panel. Am I even on tract with a true cottage style interior door at all? What about knobs/levers? I was thinking a matte black lever to off set all the white in the house but perhaps a satin nickel would be better? What is at true cottage style knob/lever look like? Please post your photos, I need true inspirational help!

Gee I never thought about it. I lean toward cottage but it is rather eclectic. It is an old house so our knobs are the original glass or crystal and the doors are the doors. the doors still have the original mahogany stain on them and they are 2 recessed panel doors. DH stripped and refinished one years ago and it looks like cherry. The swinging door from DR into kitchen is also recessed panels and is painted and wallpaper that matches the DR is in the recessed panels. Vintage crystal knobs are on the door.I never thought about painting all of the doors.
    Some help huh?

Here are some of my doors. The hardware is chrome w/ crystal knob. Obviously the hardware is not all on.

Here are mine, crystal and brushed nickle.

Acountryfarm - did you choose all polished chrome throughout your entire home? It looks very nice - LUV your schoolhouse light. Also did you have your trim/doors painted on site or factory painted? Can you share which color paint you used? Thank you

Brutuses - lovely knobs - can I ask where you got those from?

I have a cottage. No photos yet because I'm still renovating. But my doors are white, recessed shaker style panels and I have brass plates with glass knobs. I like the look of your glass knobs with the nickel, too. I'll try to take some photos since my bedrooms were painted this weekend.

buddyrose - are they the recessed 3 panel doors? Please post a photo.

I live in an old cottage house and have many types of doors with transomes above them and usually with porcelain knobs.

I will try and post some photo's tomorrow. But you are most likely looking for new cottage owners.

dreamywhite - all hardware & fixtures in home are polished chrome. I really just love the classic look of it.
The trim color is Sw's Dover White. It is beautiful, especially in person. All the cabs & woodwork , etc was painted on site. We have extensive woodwork & built-ins so needed to do it after installation.
I do have a very cottage type feeling to my house although it is very large. If i can share other photos that might help you please let me know.

Thanks for the nice comments also.

acountryfarm - do you happen to have a photo of your foyer light? I am also stuck on this subject and don't know what to pick. Thank you

Our cottage was built in 1900 and still has the original doors and most of the porcelain knobs but some have been replaced with the crystal knobs over the years.

All of the doors are similar with the panel style- but the kitchen door is a swinging door, our main bath has the original door but has been converted to a pocket door, 2 bedrooms have french doors. All of the doors were painted in a black finish by a previous owner and we are currently changing them all over to white. I think the finish on the hardware should be reflective of your style.

I have to laugh. Mahogany looks like cherry? Well then you must think marble looks just like a faux finish.

"original mahogany stain on them and they are 2 recessed panel doors. DH stripped and refinished one years ago and it looks like cherry"

I wonder if she means the stain is mahogany in color and the wood itself is cherry?

Our 100 year old cottage has 5 panel painted doors and the original, now resembling ORB, door hardware.

Not really what your question was, but our 1870 farmhouse has two different kinds of knobs--crystal and shiny black porcelain. We believe that the porcelain are the original and the crystal are the replacements from maybe the 20's or 30's. Love the satin finish nickel with the crystal shown in the pics above.

Cottage style I would pick simple, clean lines. Check out Restoration Hardware and Rejuvenation for ideas.

Oh, and our doors are six vertical panels--three on top that go 2/3 of the way down and then three on the bottom that are shorter.

I love the 5 panel doors where the panels are horizontal, though. Really nice.

My 1900 foursquare has six panel doors downstairs and five panels upstairs. The knobs and hinges are copper.

Love your pics, I love all those glass and porcelain knobs - totally wrong for my house though!

Don't miss the doorknobs and pulls at Anthropologie. AWEsome and fun. They are more fun to look at an actual store, though. I bought the turquoise "granita" ones for my glass front cabinet in my kitchen. And the brackets, oh my the brackets.

My 1930's Cape Cod in Maine has its original front door and hardware. I stripped the paint from it last summer and refinished it. All of the interior doors have these same knobs and the original escutcheons. Doors are either French or 6 panel.

Oh, my3dogs--I just LOVE that front door. I have a 30's cape (unfortunately it's not in New England--it's in a MD suburb of DC!!!) but as a displaced New Englander I pretend :) Anyway, you've got me wondering what I'd find if I stripped the 70 years worth of paint off my front door (it's a beautiful door and we just added another coat of paint!) This may get added to my list of projects for a rainy day (or several rainy days!)

In answer to the OP's question--I'm thinking a variety of closely related doors would be nice--rather than going with one style throughout. We're only the second owners of our house and I know the doors are all original--and we have a bit of a variety. Several with the barn door cross hatch look, most others with 6 panels..but our front has 12 small panes of glass and our kitchen door to the mudroom has 6 long skinny panes of glass. I guess what I'm saying is a little quirkiness would fit well :)
Our hardware is mostly the original tarnished brass with a little glass in a couple of places.

Thanks, berf! I actually got the bug to strip the door in January 08, and that was obviously NOT a good time to do it.

I started with the recessed panels and wondered what I had gotten into. Last summer I finished the job, and slowly and painstakingly got every bit of paint off, but it was well worth it.

I used Minwax English Chestnut Stain, and a satin oil based poly that you wipe on. I can't believe the difference in the door, from the off-white paint. I polished all the old brass hardware, and now the knob looks like a diamond in a nice bit of gold jewelry. I hope you have as good luck as I did, as I just love looking at that old door now!

my3dogs- I love the door! What did you use to strip it?

Our doors were done in black and I was going to paint them white to give them a clean look but after seeing yours I think I may strip them down.
