Kitchen cabinets! Help please!

Hi!

I am currently in the process of painting my kitchen cabinets right now.

This is the process of how I am doing it.. it may be wrong.

cleaning, sanding, priming and painting.

My cabinets are from when we built my home 20 yrs ago. They are oak but I don't think solid oak. They look tired and worn. Just downright boring.

The grain is showing thru when I painted my 2nd cabinet. I did my first one with oil paint and while it did come out beautiful the oil paint was not good for me. The smell (even with the mask) was terrible. My asthma was acting up and the clean up. OMG what a pain. I have to re-do that cabinet.

I am using lowes Valspar kitchen and bath paint. I started painting with purdy brushes and now have switched to small foam rollers.

What is your opinion on this? what am I doing wrong that is making this grain show thru?

thanks so much

sharon
