Stain vs. paint

Okay, I messed up.

I painted the cedar siding on a commercial building. The problem is that the cedar siding was stained, not painted.

Is this a total no-no? Is it damaging to the wood. It looks great. No direct sunlight on the area painted. Does it devalue the building or does it have to be removed? And, if it has to be removed. How? This sucks. I am not a professional painter/stainer and I did it for free to improve the looks of the building.....just used the wrong thing. Please advise. A painter friend pointed it out to me and basically told me that I screwed up and that cedar has to be stained, so that it can "breathe". Is this a major problem and should I be worried about the owner freaking out?
