Paint / lighting input needed

I will also post this in the Kitchen Forum - but was advised that the folks in the home decorating forum would have lots of input

We are remodeling our kitchen. It currently looks like this (a full album is attached) (excuse the clutter but been real busy planning this / other things)

Note - the current woodwork (pantry door, window trim, baseboard all matches the light wood of the cabintes and is the same throughout the house)

The layout will be similiar in terms of cabinet location but we will be adding a prostyle stainless steel 36" range / hood on the wall were the wall oven is and we will be getting cherry cabinets similiar to this:

plus there will be two off white antique with brown glaze / distressed style cabinets as large accent pieces at the end of each side of the L

Our granite will be very similiar to this:

and we are planning a Fallingwater slate backsplash just like this:

We will be keeping our existing ceramic floors which are a shade of pink (picked up slightly in the granite)

And we will be changing the current pink ceiling fan to this:

My questions are:

1. What color would you paint the walls? We were thinking perhaps a shade of grey (there is grey in the grout, on the floor tile, in the granite and in the slate backsplash). But we are not sure how dark or light to go. We have a bunch of samples from Benjamin Moore and other

2. Would you do anything to the woodwork in the kitchen (remember it goes throughout the house). We thought about changing the pantry door color - and perhaps the window trim to either match the cherry cabinte, the antique whote cabintes or ??? - but are hesitant to change the baseboards because they tie in to the adjoining rooms

3. What pendant light would you go with over the island (the bulkhead is coming down and the two recessed cans are being changed to 3 pendants). We need a light that has some power - so no candleabra bulb options. We are looking for at least 35w halogen lights. I unfortunately don't have a pic of one option - it is a clear with red brush strokes art glass - with an inner shade in white - kind of a cross between:

If the yellow section inside was white and the outside section was more clear with red brush strokes like this shade

or perhaps a tiffany style like this

or

or

or finally something like this:

Thanks for your input

Beautiful cabinets and granite, and I love the backsplash.

If you're going to keep the pink-toned floor, then I think a pale blue-grey for the walls would be nice.

No need to keep the woodwork the same in the kitchen as in the rest of the house. I would go with white.

Not crazy about any of the lighting choices. I like the stained glass look, but you're not really going for an Arts & Crafts feel, are you? I like the third one best of all. Have you thought of going with a holophane-type pendant? One less expensive than the one in the link I provided, of course. :)

    Here's a better representation of a holophane-type mini-pendant.

    Thanks !!

I appreciate the pale blue-grey suggestion for the walls. I will try and get some samples. I know I have picked up a bunch of gray samples and some have other underlying tints.

On the woodwork - if we go with white (or even off white to say match the 2 "antique" cabinets, what is the best way to deal with the transition of the basebaord detween rooms?

Lighting we are still perplexed. But really didn't want something plain white like the Holophane example.

Thanks. Anyone else have any thoughts?

I wanted to say that I REALLY like the last 2 lights berryberry posted and in particular I like the 2nd to last one (the angular one with the blue green circle? I have no clue about paint colors, but think that light really brings out the blue-green grey from the granite and backsplash.

I like the light that organic posted. Another consideration w/ the pendants is the fact that your ceiling fan will apparently have a chrome finish. I'd get the pendants in a chrome too rather than the bronze type finish that some of the pendants you posted have. What is the metal finish on the cabinet hardware?

I'd say to make the transition between diff. color woodwork at a logical corner.

Finally, I have the same backsplash in a different color! We love it and get a lot of compliments.

    Thanks for the additional input.

sueb - glad to hear you and others like your backsplash. I thought about trying to match the pendant metal to the fan - that seemed to make the most sense but had a difficult time finding good possibilities. As to the hardware - on the couple painted off-white cabinets, it will be ORB. On the cherry cabinets - probably a pewter or possibly nickle (still making this choice)
