Braided Rugs

I've been thinking about this for a long time now, and because of cestor's topic about finding a rug, I decided to ask.

Where ARE all the braided rug people? Online, the stores sell hundreds of braided rugs, so the customers are out there, including myself.

But when I call rug stores, even stores that sell "thousands", they only have 2 or 3 braided rugs.

When I see pictures of fellow posters homes, I don't think I've ever seen a braided rug before!

None of my friends have braided rugs either. About the only place one can get a braided rug is online. Obviously they're being sold quite a lot since there's such a large selection and variety, but the stores won't sell them. Why is that?

Anyone here have them and want to show pictures?

Hi Oakley! The braided rug I ordered for my den was waiting for me at my door when I got home this afternoon! Haven't taken the plastic off yet! It's the 6x9 "Angela" rug from JCPenney in Harvest Gold. The quality looks pretty good through the plastic. Will see the full story tonight when dh comes home, as I need him to help me get it placed under the furniture.

Have wondered myself what's up with no braided rugs in the stores! I also saw tons online. CSN had a huge selection! The place where I bought my oriental Karastans does not sell them, & the rug expert who was helping me in this very nice furniture store where I bought them seemed bugged by the fact that they didn't carry them. She knew that customers buying orientals for certain rooms could still be potential buyers for braided rugs for other rooms! To her, it was really lost business, as she worked commision-only! She recommended the LLBean catalog to me for this purpose, but I really liked the colors in this "Angela" better than anything else I saw for my room.

I guess the braided rug does not make a fashion-forward statement, but the look is really ideal, imo, for my room the way I envision it. I have a colonial, folk-art-inspired feel to the art & furnishings there, & a braided rug seems like just what I need to pull it all together! Will find out soon if I was on the right track!

The Capel family has been making braided rugs for almost 100 years and I believe are carried by 100s of retailers. The owners of the company were friends of my parents and when I got married they gave me a huge braided rug in "my colors." Oh how I wished I had taken care of it and kept it. Oh well that was nearly 25 years ago. I guess maybe I've grown up and learned to appreciate things now.

I just ordered a Capel braided rug today! I got it for the entryway and if I like it, I'll get the larger size for the room. A link to the one I bought is below, a 3' x 5'.

Stinky, I love braided rugs and can't wait to see yours! IMO, they go with a lot of decor, from country, rustic...to cottage, or just "homey." lol.

I bet when people think of braided rugs, they envision the old brown and beige styles that were around years ago. Boy, have they come a long way since then!

I love braided rugs! When I was growing up in the 60s, my mom had them throughout our home. Right before I moved into my very first home in the early 80s, which just so happened to be in the Philippines as I was married to an Air Force guy at the time, I bought a couple of braided rugs at Montgomery Ward and had them shipped over. It was like having a little bit of Americana so far from my home.

Just visible in this photo is the braided rug in our upstairs bedroom.

Jen, I love your bedroom! The braided rug gives it the perfect finishing touch!

Braided rugs also work well on top of carpet.

Since I have most of the front part of the house packed away for the demo, I had a braided runner in the hallway. Last week I got it out and put it in the bedroom as you first walk in, and it goes down the length of the bed. It's perfect there, and added a brightness I've been wanting for the room!

And there's nothing like walking on a braided rug during winter. And in summer, the braided rugs also make rooms cheery. Can you tell I like braided rugs? lol

I love braided rugs, too. And Jen, your bedroom is beautiful!

we have a store that sells used , new, custom, and kits for the original braided rugs you remember from your grandmothers day. Its in NH called country braid house. I have purchased kits and used rugs from them and have been very pleased. It is 100% wool, thick or thin braids, quite expensive but last years & years to pass on.

We have a large braided rug in our sitting room. There is also a smaller matching one by the front door. We have had them in the room for 6 years and love them.

I can't remember if I recommended a braided rug to stinky-gardner, but i've always loved them myself, and think they can be used in almost any style of decorating, except maybe contemporary.

My decorating style is French country, and a braided rug works well. A patterned rug isn't necessary to add a little color to a floor, and they are fairly childproof.

Oakleyok....There are still plenty of stores up here in New England that sell braided rugs. I think it's just the area of the country you're in. I don't have any in my house, but my aunt (in her circa 1778 colonial) buys hers from LL Bean, Country Curtains, and a few local stores. I believe LL Bean sells the Capel brand.

I was going to suggest that Penney's sells braided rugs.

Braided rugs are just not my style, I guess. To me, they are more country looking.

Jen - I love your bedding!

Before my DD was born, I was quite crazy about furnishing her room with things that wouldn't out-gas (synthetics) or aggravate potential allergies (wool). I hunted around and found a really cute cotton braided rug in brights and pastels on white. I've dragged it around and kept it in storage all these years and finally put it in my art studio in this house. It is huge and I never had the right room for it, bt I am really glad I hung on to it.

When we lived on the boat, my colors were all clear and bright and at the time, there was very little to be had in the way of rugs in anything but muted neutrals. I had a custom braided rug made Capel in "my" colors.
