Do we need 4 coats?

We are building our 1st home. The painter is recommending 4 coats for the initial paint job (1 primer, 3 paint) on the highest areas. This is a 3 story Victorian with 12x12 roof pitch and gingerbread. The materials are: roofing - Metro metal shingle, trim - wood, siding - hardiplank.

The painter says it's unlikely we will repaint the top portion down the road - this seems wrong to me. He also says 4 coats will last longer and hold up better. Is this true?

2nd question: I used Pratt & Lambert on our current house and love it. Is this still high quality, or should I look at others?

Thanks!
