Did you ever try it? I too live in the Baltimore with a 1920s cedar shingle home stained barn brown. Would like to use a solid stain to make it lemon yellow but don't know if I can get coverage. My neighbor with an identical house went much lighter but taupe.

Why not? Solid color stain is like a paint really. Yellow over brown will take at least 3 coats. To help with coverage I would brush/roll the first coat then spray the second, or at least spray the areas that can be sprayed.

Because the solid hide stains are like a thinned paint, they tend to cover less well. You will know for sure by making a test sample on the actual shingles. The acrylic based stains will bond quite well to the older stain.

Do you need to prime first or just add the new solid stain over the old solid stain? I would like to go from light gray solid stain to white solid stain and Sherwin Williams is not sure whether a primer should be added or now.
