Width Between Range Wall and Island...help!!!

15 years ago

Hello, I hope that you can help as I need to make a decision by Friday. The KD originally planned for 42' between the sink and the island and 48' between the range and the island. The range is a 36' Kitchen Aid professional range and the door height is 21'. I'm worried that the aisle is going to be too tight (even though 4 ft seems like a lot, with the 30'D range and a 21' door, that doesn't allow much space). It is slightly offset, but I'm not sure that makes a ton of difference.

What do you have in your kitchen for a walkway between a range and island?

I have attached my layout image. {{!gwi}}

Here is a link that might be useful: {{!gwi}}

    The subject is a little misleading, so hopefully you understood what I was going for...The dimension is 48" between the front of the range (handle and knobs) and the island.

    The dimensions suggested by your KD (42" in one isle and 48" in the other) are textbook dimensions for the space when used by multiple cooks, as suggested by NKBA.

    If there will be just one cook, having them both 42" would even be acceptable.

    Beyond that, if it "feels" too tight for your personal liking - and you have the space - it's your call, your kitchen.

    Keep in mind your countertop overhangs, too. That could cut another 2-3" off your space. We have 49" in our galley kitchen, and the sink and range are slightly offset, but still overlapping, on opposite walls. With one person working in the kitchen it isn't a problem. With two, it becomes a bit more of a problem, but only if someone for some reason has to pass through while the oven is open.

    In our case, the kitchen is the shortest path across the center of the house. So that is a particular problem for us that you wouldn't have -- folks who want to walk through the work zone rather than take the 12 extra steps it would take to go the other way.

    I have 34" from tip/lip of stove to counter overhang edge and I love it. (40" from cabinet face to cabinet face) I didn't want to take any extra steps - just pivot from range to island. There's enough room for a person to pass when I'm working. When the range door is open though no one can pass - and we like it that way with young kids around. We really worked this number and mocked it up and lived with boxes used as an island in our old kitchen for a week or 2 until we found a comfortable number.

    The distance from the main sink with DW to island is 44" for us and I'm glad to have the extra room. The island holds our everyday dishes so both a drawer and the DW is open at the same time. You cannot pass but both can be opened.

    I recommend mocking things up and live with it for awhile. When I first mocked up the island I hated it. I never had an island before and it seemed like a barrier. over 2 weeks I got use to it. Now that it's in I LOVE my island.

    I too am worried like Briana, especially after reading this thread.

    We mocked the distance up with the dining room table and sofa table and decided on 54" --- this is quite a bit wider then the rest of you (and this would have been countertop to countertop instead of cabinet to cabinet). It wasn't that it seemed perfect just how small we thought we could deal with. I think both my DH and I are reluctant to go smaller because too big is better then too small...it's hard to know for sure what just right would be.

    Does anyone have 54" (or within 1-2" of that) and are happy or unhappy with that distance?

    I think this is what is most difficult with remodeling...you have decisions you have to make and have to live with the consequences of those decisions.

    I understand the general guidelines for 42" and 48", but I guess what I am wondering is if the oven door changes anything...Is a oven included in that 48" dimension or is that just the guideline for walkway between two sets of cabinets???

    thanks for your input so far. Aloha is right- the thought of living with "what I should have done" is really playing devil's adovocate in my head while I still have time to change it!!!

    We have 44" from granite edge to granite edge (range wall to island...and actually from the island to the other sides, too). It's more than adequate. I was worried about it when seeing the outlines on the floor, pre-cab installation, but after it all got put in, I couldn't imagine it any better.

    Our distance is about 52". We had planned for 54". One thing we did was we were on site during the placement of our island and were able to have them place it at 48" (it was actually one big piece of cabinetry!) and then at 54" and then tweak from there. We personally really like the larger space - we have a prep sink in the island and a dw. We also had my husband who likes to cook and is a big guy open the range and bend over like he was pulling something out - we didn't want it to feel too tight with one person doing that and someone else walking by. Hope this helps.
