Pittsburgh's Grand Distinction

Is anyone familiar with Pittsburgh's Grand Distinction brand paint they make for Menards? I know Pittsburgh makes good paint because I've used it in the past. But, I am concerned about how much the quality will suffer of something they make for a home improvement store and sell for less.

i've used it in 2 rooms - i like it okay. my only other paint experience is with behr premium plus and valspar (the top of the line one, forgot what it's called). i think out of all 3, i like pittsburg a bit better.

i have bought BM aura, SW duration (exterior) but haven't tried them yet so can't compare if the more expansive paint are better (the 3 mentioned above are comparable in prices).

my painting experience is also limited to 4 rooms, all in egg shell, all primed with zinssar 123 and one room is painting over wood paneling (behr).

    1. Two days ago, my wife finished painting one of the bedrooms in our house. She used Pittsburgh Grand Distinctions paint, because a girlfriend raved about it. At $30.00 per gallon, it is not an inexpensive interior paint. Immediately after the room was completely painted, the paint smell was overwhelming! We installed a box fan in the open bedroom window and left the door to the bedroom open, the box fan is operating on high speed! The following day the smell was still bad, we now put another box fan, set at high speed, in the bedroom doorway, blowing air from the house into the bedroom. Two days have passed, we will try to sleep in that bedroom tonight. We will never purchase this paint again!

It does have quite a strong smell to it. They have a diagram at the store of pros and cons for their paint. For a bedroom you can use Pittsburgh Ultra instead, that doesnt smell. The Grand Distinction has mildew resistance, which is better for a bath or kitchen, and probably why it smells. When I used Behr premium plus Ultra, it also had a strong smell and was mildew resistant. So instead I normally use premium plus unless in kitchen and bath.

I have used Dutch Boy Platinum in my kitchen and dont remember it smelling as bad, but it has been a long time.

FYI, the paint samples are not great at menards, pretty small sample size, colors not always spot on. I had better luck with samples at HD.

PS, Go buy paint at a real paint store, most problems solved.

Just used it for the first and last time. Used both eggshell and semi-gloss. The eggshell covered well but touch ups do not blend. The semi-gloss - yellow going over tan - will take at least 3 coats. I have two coats on there, to include two "cut ins" and there are thin spots all over the place whether using a roller or a brush. I am going to go to HomeDepot and get the same color and finish in Behr. They really do have one-coat paints, and touch ups are invisible even if made years later.
