Refresh this room....

I found this print today at Hobby Lobby. I like the colors (cream, purples, old golds, mossy greens...) and the style--garden cottage with a touch of French flair. I thought I might use it as an inspiration piece to refresh my living room...and eventually more rooms.

Health issues keep me from being able to spend a lot, but contribute to me **needing** a cozy, comfortable, pleasant place to endure chemotherapy and recuperation.

So brainstorm with me...if paint, fabric, art, and accessories were your main weapons, what would you do to this room?

Inspiration pic

Here's the living room views...

And this just lets you know I have B.R.O.W.N. couches. Brown. Whose idea was that???? Someday I'm changing them, but not this spring. Anything you see on the walls in the pic is no longer there. Blank canvas waiting for...something...

I apologize for the clutter. ;0) That's life around here these days...

Thanks for the ideas...

My thoughts are with you as you recover from your illness. I think you have a lovely home. Lots of light and air!
First off, I would work on decluttering the fireplace. Your inspiration picture does not seem quite right above your fireplace. Too small maybe? I would remove the kitchen chairs. This seems like a large room and you might be able to float the couches closer to the fireplace. How about doing a floorplan for us?
Is there someplace else the TV can go. To me it disturbs the tranquilty of the fireplace wall.
The couches are OK but I am not a fan of leather couches and not in the living room. A light gold and green throw in a pretty fabric tossed over one of the couches. Same with some throw pillows with your three favorite colors.
I love the color and style of your walls.

I love the purples/reds in the picture. I think they would look amazing with your brown sofas!

I really like brown, and I like your brown sofas. However, I would think more "French lounge" (like a country home) vs. dainty French (not a Paris apartment) with the sofas. In other words, don't fight the sofas. I think warm, warm, warm!

One of the things I notice about your room (I was just noticing it about MINE, so you are in good company, ha, ha) is that you have a lot of little things. I say (this is what I am saying to myself!) GO BIG. Go bigger with your wall art . . .

I am thinking a darker tone on the walls would look good-- something richer. It will balance the walls so there is not the fight between delicate and solid.

I am doing a lot of sitting around these days, so I have been spending time on Houzz and Pinterest. It is really helping me get my vision down. You might have fun on those sites! On Houzz, I would suggest putting in "English country" and "French country."

I would also put in search words like "brown" and "purple" to see what pops up!

I am sorry to hear about your chemo. :( I hope you have a comfortable and speedy recovery.

One more thing . . .when you paint the trim, don't paint it white. I would stick to a tone close to your wall color.

Love the fireplace melange.....I think you are just a few baby steps away from doing a temporary "cozy up" of your room.

Get a cozy fussy throw for the brown sofa....really it's OK! Brown leather can be cozy. Add more pillows....oh and ditch the torchiere, get a bridge lamp in there somewhere....I can't see the whole room.
And ( never thought I would say this!!) get a painted piece for a coffee table....not a "forever" table but just until the chemo is over and you feel well again. Something with a pickled finish and some country French flowers on it....like your sign.
I bought new sofa and love seat when I was doing the chemo thing....the rest of the room didn't "go" but the new furniture where I could curl up, made me feel better....and naps more inviting.
Take care....there is a good room waiting after chemo.....but for now just make it cozy!

I would certainly use your inspiration painting to go for a garden feel. Search online for garden rooms to try to duplicate the feel. You could buy a cast iron urn to duplicate the one in your painting to fill with fresh or faux flowers, paint your coffee table white or find an inexpensive one on craigslist to paint, maybe paint some side tables happy colors like the green in your picture, hunt up some quilts in bright pretty colors for those naps, paint the walls a light color like cream or pale yellow to keep the room bright, use some cheap sheers (JCPenney usually has them) to put on your windows to catch the spring and summer breezes, and ask any loved one who offers to help during your recuperation to help you keep the room immaculately clean!

Here's to your quick healthful exit on the other side of this crisis. My thoughts are with you.

Maybe Linda is onto something. If the $ is there, maybe focus on putting the money and time into new furniture? I have decorated around things that were not my favorites and I wasted a LOT of time and money that way.

But like she said, there is a ton you can do to make it cozy with the sofas (which I like!).

Is that a kitchen pass through above the sofa?

We can't really see all of the room and adjoining areas, but my first thoughts are to declutter the fireplace mantel and to pull the sofas out of the corner. Sitting in the corner is like a timeout and that isn't cozy, especially when they are on the edge of a great hallway. Get them in closer to the windows and the fireplace and make the through traffic go behind them. Looks like the sofa might face the fireplace and the loveseat back against the windows. That might not work, but the general idea is to cozy up to the fireplace and the view outdoors. That palm can go into the corner vacated by the sofas and pull the outdoors further in, so to speak.

Looks like you have flowers on the mantel to look like the art piece. Find a bowl or pot you have and make them into an arrangement -- doesn't have to be formal or fancy, but let them adorn your coffee table or an end table. A bowl of spring colored eggs would be another possibility.

I can't tell what the dark thing across the lower part of the mantel is, but it is distracting. I would remove it.

If you are up to painting, your wall treatment is nice, but a yellow brown, the sofas red brown and the carpet light brown. It's all brown and the easiest one to change is paint. I was thinking of a green pulled from the background of the sign in your art piece or the lighter parts of the moss. After that, I would look at your art and ways to regroup and hang them. Some are too low for me and some too high, too close and too far apart (groupings should be closer together and things that are dissimilar should have more space between them.

You could also paint a few things white or very pale green, dark green -- from the lamp in the corner to the TV stand, maybe the coffee table. You could crackle them or distress them (to show the wood or paint another color to peak through before you do the white or cream).

You could also paint the walls cream or white and paint any furniture or lamp green. Either way, I'd want to soften up the all that brown. And I'm not against brown leather. I'm siting next to my brown leather sectional, but I have more white and color in my room too.

Those are my first thoughts. Take 'em for what you paid for 'em and a grain of salt. ;) Whatever your choices, I hope you find what feeds your soul, warms your spirit and strengthens your recovery.

Great ideas already mentioned ~ but you can absolutely use your cozy leather sofas for your vision. Add some off-white or cream to balance out your FP...a comfy, textured throw, some cute pillows, a cream wicker piece of some sort, etc. Maybe find a low cost indoor-outdoor, textured sisal-looking rug? All these cream-colored additions will also nicely tie in your fun, new find. Sending healthy wishes to you...plse keep us posted.

I hope you have a speedy recovery! I like the idea of a garden room, french country.

The first thing I'd do is find an old, pastel quilt and lay it across the back of the sofa, then go from there.

I also like the idea of painting your coffee table.

You have a great room to play around with!

Wow, y'all are terrific! First of all, thank you for all the well wishes. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in early December...so my question for every lady I meet is 'have you had a mammogram recently?' I had not and I'm blessed that a friend nagged me into getting one. My type of bc is generally only caught by mammo in the early stages. (and mine was) By the time it's big enough to feel it's way too big.

    So....have you?

Now, decor....I LOVE these ideas! I'm going to print them all out and give them some thought. I have a week before my next chemo treatment to pull a few of them together. I love the idea of painting my wood pieces a cream or mossy green. I love painted wood, so that feeds my vision...and painting the coffee table hadn't even crossed my mind. The idea of pulling the creams from the fireplace 'out' into the room is good.

Finding a big urn/wicker/indoor garden art might be a fun project on days I feel good.

A selection of quilts and throws in appropriate colors makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Great ideas.

Thanks for all the positive comments about the room and the big brown couches. Those couches are terrific...they've survived all the lanky teenage boys we've thrown at them. Since the teen boys are now young adult men (at least in age...) I think I'm just tired of them. You are right, big brown leather can be cozy.

Off to wake up my youngest young man so he can help me rearrange.

    Love the ideas! Thanks!

Glad to hear your encouraging news. Keep us posted on your changes as well as how you are doing.

I am at the same point with my sectional -- it has survived from little boys to teens and is mostly doing well. The arms are a little flat and I'm tempted to just see if I can plump them up because I can't find anything that would fit as well and we still need leather for the family room because of the pool in the back yard -- both with teens and the dogs. Not to mention that it is so comfy I fell alseep on it the day it was delivered!

I think this is a great project -- feeds the days you feel good and those when you don't. Again, all my best.

I'm thinking of a moss green chenille throw and flowered pillows.
    Get well soon.
