Decorating with Brass

I would like to know if brass is coming back. I love the look and warmth of the color and we are building our new dream home and would like to use it in the kitchen, dinning room, door knobs, cabinet pulls, chandeliers, etc. A few years ago, I could not find anything but nickel or painted knobs, everything that I found dark and ugly, I think they call it OLD WORLD look. But I find it very ugly. But now I am not having that problem. It is much more available. Brass is a happy color and makes me feel happy not dark but bright and happy. Brass is traditional and brass is forever.

If you really like something, it's silly to worry about whether it's in or out. Just do it!

I also like brass and I wouldn't hesitate to use it, regardless of what the style nazis are saying at the moment.

I think real brass is more desirable than say the builders brass doors knobs. I like brass but I also have the cheap builders brass knobs through my house. I prefer the look of ORB for doors but it wasn't that big of a deal to me.

If you like it, I would use it.

Get what you love and enjoy it in your new house.
    Go Brass!

The builder really pushed me to use either ORB or SN, but DH didn't like the darkness of ORB and SN didn't give the warm feeling I wanted. In the end, I went with antique brass. Some people may find it dated, but I'm very pleased with the way it turned out. Go with what you love. You're the one who has to live with it.

    Totally Confused

I think brass is coming back and altho I've changed out or painted my cheapo builders brass light fixtures to bronze or stainless/nickel I left my cheap door handles and used steel wool on them. They are now the softer less "brassy" color of the hinges and I don't mind them at all. The new brass/gold fixtures are beautiful and I think will be more timeless than my bronze and stainless/nickel fixtures.

There are only so many metal colors and finishes in the world, and they go in and out of fashion, so I'd say you can bet that if brass hasn't been "in" for a few years, then it is on its way back!

Go with what you love. I don't think antique brass has ever truly become dated - it just got pulled down with shiny brass. As for longevity, I believe shiny chrome will always be around.

If you're going for a traditional look, then brass is great. Go for what you love. After all, it's YOUR dream home!

nothing wrong with brass. my house is of an age where anything else would just look dumb. the rejuvenation catalogue is my best friend when it comes to outlet covers, curtain rods, etc.

I have been seeing more of it in various showrooms. I have antique brass in my house, in fact I just bought an chandelier in that color. I do not care for the bright brass colors but the things I'm seeing in the showrooms seem to have a brushed texture and are a dulled down color.

I think what everyone said above is true. I'm actually headed towards mixed finishes in my house. In our bathroom remodel we used polished nickel fixtures and antique brass on our furniture type items (mirror finish, chandelier, etc). and I think they look great mixed. It helps avoid that "oh, you remodeled your house in X year". Go with brass if you love it!

I say go for what makes you feel good. As far as what is in......when I got granite countertops in 1996 I was told it was on its way out. When I got granite countertops in 2001 I was told granite was on the way out. When I got granite countertops 6 months ago I was told granite was the in thing......go figure.
