Pantry Roll Out Question

Hello everyone!

I'm visiting from over at the Building a Home forum. I'm finally making some decisions about my kitchen. I ran a search on this forum, but couldn't quite find the answer to my question (probably because I used the wrong search terms).

After agonizing (I know, goes without saying), I finally have decided to go with Ikea cabs. I'm trying to make decisions about the pantry. I'm very torn, and trying to do some research. So, I love the individual rollouts that my mom has. Very functional. My sister, however, assures me that I would be fine with plain-old shelves. What I do not love is the whole pull-out option that Ikea offers. My pantry is 30", and the Ikea rollouts don't come that wide.

The question is, kitchen experts, is there another source where I could buy just a rollout shelf, and not the whole cab? If you want to chip in your two cents on shelf vs. rollout, that's welcome. Thanks for your input. I'm very stuck on this one.

Ikea does not sell the 30" roll outs but you can purchase them from Blum. If you go on Ikea fans, someone did this. They purchased 30" drawers from Ikea and then retrofitted the fronts with a wood bar. The Blum pullouts are all the pieces from Blum including the drawer glides. I am referring to the Tandembox line. I like Cabinetparts.com for these types of things. If you have not been to the Ikeafans.com, you should visit it. I love roll outs and I intend to do the same 30" pullouts in mine. The blum glides for the rollouts can be purchased at 75kg or 110kgs per rollout. They are very sturdy.
Download the blum catalog and it will show you all the fantastic options you can get from Blum.

    Good luck!

Have you thought about doing something completely different with the shelves?

Here's a picture of how I store cans in my pantry. I just added a second shelf and left the dividers loose so that I can change the width of the rows when needed.

homepro, thanks for the website; that sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. lissa, that's a really good idea. My husband could probably whip something up for me that would be just like that. Thanks!

Anyone else got something for me?

Pullout shelves vs pullout pantry seems to be a personal decision. I have both- but much prefer the functionality of pullout shelves. The reason I have a pullout unit (bought from Lee Valley), is that it is a side-mount, so I could hang brooms and mops from one side of the 'pantry/broom closet', and still have lots of shelves for storage. What I don't like about the pullout unit, is that you lose accessibility. ie, in individual shelves, you have it open on the top.

So, for typical installations, where the shelves are attached on both sides, I would prefer/recommend individual pullout shelves.

You can see that with mine, I have the pantry door blocking access on one side, so am limited to just one side- still this was the best solution for my situation, but for 30" wide shelves- you could have them closer together and have more storage with individual shelves

I saw on ikeafans today someone posted a modification to the 30" pantry to create roll out shelves with the Ikea Komplementshelevesfromtheir closet line.

I thought you might find it useful for your dilemma.

Sara M that is brilliant! Thank you for sharing! I'm not a member over at Ikeafans as yet. Gardenweb keeps me pretty busy already :). I might need to go ahead and join. Sorry I didn't reply sooner; I've been busy trying to apppease the electrical inspector....

    Thanks again to everyone!
