Curtain help please

I've almost finished decorating the den. I got the furniture and rug I want, and the wall colors will stay the same. My problem is the curtains I have are far too short. I don't want a huge "puddle" since I have 2 large dogs. But I'd at least like them to the floor.

I don't mind the blue at all, I rather like it. I've tried photoshopping in other drapes but can't seem to find anything that really speaks to me. I'd also like to keep the roman shades. I made them about 7 years ago and still love them.

Any suggestions out there? Photoshop pros? I'm open to some ideas. I think the curtains and then some throw pillows are the last items to put into place.

What a beautiful room! I love the way you've assembled the colors - rich oriental rug, tomato-red leather chairs, strong but gentle blue curtains, and warm tan malt-y walls. I'd be happy every time I entered that room. It is timeless.

How about if you add a band to the bottom of the curtains, bringing them down to just clearing the floor? There are several people on this forum who know how to do that and can make good suggestions.

    Really, your room is stunning!

Thanks Sable, I just put a leather storage bench underneath those 2 pics in the bottom photo. It caps off the furniture list -- god bless O.co is all I can say.

I considered adding a band to those curtains - maybe a bronze tone, but wondered if I needed a slightly more muted blue. The curtains themselves were like $15/pair at the Big O.

It's a lovely, sophisticated room . . . except for the drapes. They appear to be too light in color and texture. I would go for something more muted and with texture without sheen - something that looks like linen rather than silk. I would use curtain rings rather than shirring them on the rod.

I love the barrel chairs! I like that you are not tempted to match the drapes to them.

    I totally agree with graywings.

Another option is no drapes. Could you have just the roman shades? IMO that long wall with the drapes hanging behind the sofa and the speaker feels a little awkward.

Love your room..beautiful and inviting!! But I'm wondering how it would look with no drapes, and just the pretty shades. If you want some blue, can you add accessories and pillows as an accent. To me, so much of that light blue kind of fights with the other strong colors.

I like everything in that room except the drapes. Just too light and bright. You have blue in the rug, but not that color. But the roman shades look great. Maybe take them down and see how you like it with just the shades.

I agree that the curtain drapes just don't work. Even if you added a band on the bottom to lengthen them, the color is wrong. I also don't like them shirred on the rod. I would use drapes on rings, or grommets or back tabs. I think a navy blue would look great. Like this:

I agree and think the color terricks posted is much better.

I definitely agree that you should not have a drape fabric with a sheen.

    The room is gorgeous, though!

might be better with no drapes at all.

Strictly my personal taste, but IMO heavy dark drapes would drain the color from those beautiful walls and deaden the room. Perhaps the OP could tell us whether she is interested in changing the drapes or wants a solution for keeping them in place.

Thanks for the input guys. In the spirit of the coming spring and summer, I wanted to keep it a little light and airy. However I think just the shades alone make it a little drab and bare -- unfinished if you will. Sable, I'm not locked into keeping those drapes at all. Like I said, they were maybe $15 bucks a pair from the Big O.

I need something there, since the windows behind the couch are "off center". I got an idea from Candace Olson a while back to offset that by slightly offsetting the curtain rods and balance them a little with curtains. The window to the right butts right up against the corner.

My niece suggested maybe a gold tone with a chocolate band on the bottom. A friend today suggested a rich chocolate to keep the room a strong "pub" feel.

So yes, I need curtains, but I'm not married to the ones that are hanging now. The pic below shows my friend's chocolate version - not exactly light and airy, but I don't hate it. Gah.. had no idea the last thing would be this hard.

I would not go with dark curtains. Yes, they "go," but it's TOO heavy.

I think you could go one of two ways:

(1)Keep the blue and add something to the bottom, but not a dark color. Otherwise, it will look like your curtains are still too short, as the dark bottom will blend in with everything else. If you do this, you could bring in accessories in the light blue. I think this is a little tricky, but if you got kilim pillows, for example, with the right colors, it might be OK. They would have the right weight to work with the sofas, but bring in the colors from the curtains.

    (2) Something along the lines of what your niece suggested. I would work with the wall color, and see something that is in the same color "level" or intensity. I know there is a word out there to describe what I mean, but I do not know it! In other words, something that complements your wall color without a lot of contrast. I think if you go with a suede/velvet/velour, then you will get a richness of fabric that can stand up to the heavy sofas.

You have a really lovely room! The carpet is amazing!

What about drapes in the color of the vases? It looks like that color is also in your rug? It is a beautiful room!
    What's the big O?

How about a cream color curtain?

Thanks so much for all the help. Anele, I am in love with those pillows. I never thought of those, and I found some great turkish pillow covers online. I'm also going to pick up some fabric samples this weekend and try some golds and creams.

OK guys, I gave up. Sometimes you have to just "let it go". After searching and trying different curtains, I finally realized those roman shades are my problem. Yes I was proud I made them myself, but I had to admit to myself that they are about 10 years old and have been so sun faded that their real colors are no longer crisp. (sniffle) It's time to let them go and let the room "evolve".

I'm going to start over with wooden blinds. I'll re-post when I get that going with a final pic of what I came up with. I think that will allow me to get a curtain that coordinates with the room and the rug, and that I'm not so "locked down" due to the shades.

IMO sky blue curtains are perfect in that room - they keep it light and fun, an unexpected color, but good. I agree though that no sheen, and rings would be better. The rods should also be longer, so the curtains clear the window completely when open. Have you considered a pattern, googled orange blue or coral blue curtains, or orange blue fabric if you can make your own.

If you have throw pillows with that red-orange and blue in them it will will really bring it together.
