Layout help needed!

I have finally convinced my DH that it is time to update our kitchen after living here for 10 years. Now that I've accomplished that, I'm not sure that the ideas I've conceived in my head will actually work and I'm looking for any feedback from you. You will see that from the current to the proposed layout, I would like to remove the counter and cabinet area where the cooktop and dishwasher currently are. This will also eliminate the cabinets above. In the proposed layout, I would move the dishwasher to the counter run next to the sink and will install a range next to the refrigerator. Also, I would like to add an island (that will replace the storage I will be losing) with enough seating for 3 comfortably, 4 people in a pinch. My goal is to have clutter-free countertops and more surface work area and am considering a microwave drawer but am hesitant to go that route since they are so $$$.

Here is the current layout and photos:

So many of you have such great vision and experience so I'm counting on you to help me out!! Thanks so much!

One thing that I note is that you have the fridge drawn right next to the range, and at a 24" depth. You really need to have space between the range and refrigerator.

Unless you are buying a "true counter-depth" fridge, you will not find one that is 24" deep. "Counter-depth" really runs about 27-28" and conventional is around 33". That will really make that aisle to the left of the island too narrow.

What is the "built in with glass uppers" at the bottom of the picture? It's drawn about 6" deep--does the rest of the real depth of it go off the paperspace, or is that supposed to represent the real depth? Even as drawn that aisle at the end of the island is much too narrow.

I understand what you are trying to accomplish here, but more information is needed with dimensions to understand what amount of room you really have. This room may be more amenable to another U plan turned 90-degrees from the original to make a C.

When you have room for a table, you don't always have room for an island. A table is moveable while an island is fixed, and generally higher...it can make a big difference.

I saw a similar layout to this on the kitchen store gallery website. I've included the link. Look for photo #211 and 317.

Is there a doorway next to the refrigerator or empty space?

    Buehl

It appears to be the window with the low cabinet underneath it behind the current table. (The fourth photo).

Thanks for the feedback! I will get better dimensions tonight when I get back home to give you a better idea of what we are working with.

Palimpsest - The built-in glass uppers are 12" deep and 42" wide - they match up flush with the chimney that runs through the kitchen. In the current layout, the refrigerator is next to the wall oven and I was planning to have the same layout when installing a range or have a small cabinet between the two - for cookie sheets or spices, etc. to give some separation. No plans for a counter depth frig at this time.

Buehl - next to the frig is a low, 4-drawer cabinet. It will be removed in the remodel freeing up appox. 22" beneath the window.

I will add more info tonight and thanks!

When you get dimensions, I recommend using graph paper so you can get things to scale. Inches can really matter in aisles and in cabinets. You don't want any surprises if things don't fit together as planned.
